Matt Collins 06-26-2007 12:26 PM

I am addicted to Discovery Channel, I watch it all day in the office.

Steve Lightspeed was telling me about this show the other day and I gotta tell you, these guys sound completely nuts!!

I guess this is all the latest in reality television, but I really like it better than "Fear Factor" and stuff like that.

Matt

Will check it. The Deadliest Catch is a badass show. I watch it when I can.

SinisterStudios 06-26-2007 05:45 PM

I have 15 pounds of king crab legs in my basement freezer. Every freakin time my g/f watches deadliest catch she craves crab legs and so do i.

Cant get enough of discovery, im truely addicted to Dirty Jobs, Deadliest Catch and Mythbusters.

=^..^= 06-26-2007 05:59 PM

i saw ice road truckers
this week (missed the premier )
im watchin it with my 4 year old and she asks "how thick is that ice" and i tell her "not even as thick as you are tall"... and she says " hey mom! those guys are bloody crazy!"

i agree with her.

DateDoc 06-26-2007 06:11 PM

Cool, it is available on itunes. I'll download it and watch it on the TV tonight. :thumbsup

Funny enough, Car and Driver magazine this month has an article about these guys, and the reality of the situation isn't anything like the "death wish" sort of vibe discovery tries to put on it.

Very, very few drivers have died (only a couple). The trucks driver very slowly (typically 15 mph) and are about 1 to 2 miles apart. They make long s turns going off the ice onto portages to avoid cracking the ice near the shore. The driver they interviewed basically said he would take his daughter with him on the trips except she had school or something, otherwise he would take her because they aren't really all that dangerous - it's more likely to get in an accident hauling down any given interstate on a day.

As for sinking, it happens occassionally, but for the most part it is a single axel or as the image shows a "drop" but not a totally sink to the bottom. It's just the nature of the game, and all happens at very, very slow speeds.

However, Discovery is very good at making the odd but reasonable look scary and risky. More power to them!

Word, I can't see how watching a guy drive a truck would be worthy of a show. Pretty fucking boring if you ask me. Even if they only showed the crazy shit that happens they would only be able to fill up one episode a season if that.

Actually met Jonathan the captain of the Time Bandit last fall at a local bar. Guess it's one of his favorite haunts when he's at home. He was a kick.

The show is great. Ice Road Truckers is looking interesting too.

Smurfette 06-27-2007 04:49 AM

Can't wait to see this one here. We lived in Yellowknife for a few years(What newfie hasn't! lol) and in the years we lived there only 1 went thru the ice, he was new and was speeding. Big fine for him too!! Been on the ice road as well and I can tell you, you do hear the cracking!

Dennis69 06-27-2007 04:52 AM

When I was in Yellowknife working with the airlines and I use to fly loadmaster into BHP with the loads it was nothing but tents in there... when I left 5 years BHP was a damn city with all the building etc! We use to go caribou hunting out on the ice roads and it's amazing to feel the water moving under you when those trucks are driving by!

As Raw Alex said those trucks are only allowed to go fast, actually anybody caught speeding on that road is fucked!

In the 5 years that I was there I only heard of one truck go through the ice and it's because the idiot drove over a part of the ice road that was closed!

I just watched it on You Tube and Discovery is really making it out to be a lot worst then it really is!
