I usually like the MTV Awards but these were the worst ever. I turned it off before the end of the show. It was getting boring.

The intro was funny as shit but then turned to a horror story once Michael the UberGhost appeared. Jesus Christ, he looked awful. They have a bodybag outside waiting for him? Mark my words. Something is afoul. He won't live much longer. What kind of surgery did he have? Soul Removal?

Brittany looked like a deer caught in the proverbial headlights. Couldn't put my finger on it but something is just not right in Brittanyville.
Maybe RoboBrittany's program is broke. Maybe she misses Justin. Fuck, if I know but this is a serious warning sign. She's getting old. They should have sent her token "You were good last year but will be gone next year" and sat her in the back with Mariah Carey. Debby Gibson anyone? Brittany's career could be over anyday now.

shakira is an excellent singer. unlike so many poppy gals, she doesn't need triple tracking to enhance her voice. she also writes her own songs.

I bought the System of a Down CD. Was very disappointed. Only liked 2 songs.

I think one of the main problems in music today, and it's probably more of an evolution than a problem, is that the upstart musicians don't hone their craft before going out there. I was a fan of grunge music in the 90s and loved it. Thought it was a great step in music. I didn't realize that it would pave the way for a generation of bands that aren't striving to be the best musicians. There are no more solos at rock shows, simply because there aren't any musicians who can move a crowd with a solo. And it's not that people don't like them. I saw a show on TV and they showed people going nuts for Tommy Lee's solo, while he was playing guitar, not the drums. So people do still appreciate a good solo, but the bands, they just don't take the time to become masters of their instruments.

Don't get me wrong, I really do like the music of today, I listen to a lot of different stuff and I like a lot of it, but it makes me sad sometimes. So I slap in an old Van Halen CD, listen to Eddie make that guitar go crazy and all is well again.

I was a decent enough guitar player in my day. I was voted the best guitar player in Syracuse, NY in 1989. Was into the whole neo-classical metal thing and played it well.

Anyway, the rock guitar solo is dead but personally, I don't miss it.

Right, but would you buy an Eminem album if he sang happily, duets with a Teletubby, wore stuff from Banana Republic or the Gap! hehehe, Let's leave Eminem to his anger. It works for him. I'll start complaining about him when his anger starts to move to stupid things like "Why the wiper blades on my bentley have to act up like dis" and "Strip clubs won't let me have more than 5 girls at a time". Just doesn't have the same "feel" to it.

I dont think that the level of musicianship has dropped, but I do believe that what has to be put down on a cd is a music that is a lot simpler and less demanding for a very watered down listener.

Do you really believe that the quality of playing on the top 40 albums today is the same level of playing as you found 10 20 or 30 years ago.

I think that one of the main reasons for this is the obvious transition from radio to video - the singer and the personallity has taken over from the musician and the technique or talent.

Really really good playing - awe inspiring, spine chilling guitar work - has disappeared from popular music, but I do believe that people want to hear it.

Great music will always survive - In Toronto here, Bruce Springsteen tickets sold out in 30 minutes - no advertising campaign, nothing on mtv about it - just good music getting the respect it deserves.

I can't stand Bruce Springsteen. I find nothing redeeming about his music whatsoever. This is just personal taste though. Nothing more, nothing less. I wouldn't say the guy lacks in musical ability, just that it doesn't speak to me and I don't like the music at all. I don't relate to him, his life, where he comes from or anything like it. So what? You like him. I don't. Nothing deeper than that.

i CERTAINLY don't see anything deep about Springsteen lyrics that don't exist in, say, Eminem's.
