So The Duke Lacrosse Players Got Paid.

District Attorney Mike Nifong gets the boot. I'm happy to see him go, what he did was very sad. The worst part about the whole thing is we'll never know how many other cases Nifong fucked up. I had said before I knew the guy's weren't guilty. I don't know how much the guys are getting but I don't think any amount of money is worth what happened to them.

Did any of you keep up with the story?

"DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University has reached an undisclosed financial settlement with three former lacrosse players falsely accused of rape, while a judge said late Monday he would order the disbarred prosecutor to leave office immediately."

Yea that black bitch was lying from the beginning. I hope she rots in Hell

WiredGuy 06-19-2007 06:02 AM

Good, they deserve to be paid handsomly for going through absolute hell by that DA. Although I'm not so sure the University should be paying damages, shouldn't it be the state that was prosecuting them?

I don't get why the State didn't pay it myself.

:Oh crap

Yeah, I don't quite see that either? The state is the ones who employed the DA, shouldn't the state being paying the damages?

Here's the story.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University has reached an undisclosed financial settlement with three former lacrosse players falsely accused of rape, the school said Monday.

"We welcomed their exoneration and deeply regret the difficult year they and their families have had to endure," the school said in a statement. "These young men and their families have been the subject of intense scrutiny that has taken a heavy toll."

Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and Dave Evans were indicted last year on charges of rape, kidnapping and sexual offense after a woman told police she was attacked at a March 2006 team party where she was hired to perform as a stripper. Duke suspended all three, canceled the team's season and forced their coach to resign.

The allegations were debunked in April by state prosecutors, who said the players were the "innocent" victims of a "tragic rush to accuse" by Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong. He was disbarred Saturday for breaking more than two dozen rules of professional conduct in his handling of the case.

The players' families racked up millions of dollars of legal bills in their defense, and appear likely to file a civil lawsuit against Nifong."

Only in America huh?

Well maybe now the University has learned its innocent until proven guilty.

people get falsely accused of rape pretty often...I never see them compensated for the stress. I guess being a blueblood college boy helps....

I thinks its more likely that due to all the media attention this case got rather than the fact that they were blue blooded college boys !

the university is just protecting its ass - they made plenty of statements that could be used against them. There will be many more suits filed in the coming weeks and months.

Martin3 06-19-2007 07:53 AM

The university paid now so they wouldn't have to pay more later. The real lawsuits haven't ever started yet, Duke just played it smart and payed out now so when the real suits hit they're aren't part of it or the media coverage it'll bring.

Sosa 06-19-2007 07:53 AM

The university stepping up to take care of its students? I don't see why the state wouldn't be the one putting the money out

jaysmoke 06-19-2007 07:55 AM

The next step is for that DA to head to a federal prison for not disclosing all the evidence in this case and holding back the DNA results.
I like to see him share a jail cell with Joe Francis and they both can cry the nights away.
And PLUS can imagine the money that would have been paid out to the players if these guys were BLACK the stripper and the DA WHITE.
Just something for you guys to kick around.
Cheers
Jay

You won't hear a word on this from either one of them. Guaranteed.

WiredGuy 06-19-2007 09:29 AM

I wonder about the coach, Duke settled with the 3 students, but what about the coach that they forced a resignation on?

This was a little different then your average rape case.

I'm sure the University won't be the only one reaching for the check book.

Anyone could see this coming a long time ago.

pornguy 06-19-2007 10:17 AM

Probably an agreement between the guys and the school. not to go after the state. and the school used a slush fund.

Peaches 06-19-2007 10:19 AM

I suspect there will still be a suit against the state. This was an out of court settlement.

I have no idea about their state laws, but here in Canada you could sue them both for malicious prosecution.

Essentially, it is a legal suit where you claim the police, crown attorney, etc. proceeded with a criminal case against a defendent despite being in possession - or knowledge - of material evidence that would, reasonably, lead to a dismissal of the charges or at least raise doubts about the guilt of the accused. Essentially :)
