Any opinions on whether this helps your retention any? Of course, content, update frequency, etc. are the most important but I'm curious if anyone's had any success with this.

Yep, it does.

People (most of which do not fuck around here too much) tend to be loyal to long-standing partners (no matter who they are - sponsors/traders/gallery submitters/etc.). They remember things and can be asked for a favour if there's need to.

I'm talking about sites which start at charging, say, $30 a month, then after 3 months it goes down to like $25, 6 months $15, etc.

No experience with that...but I do notice that quality sites that offer a 6 or 12 month membership usually do good with it. People like a bargain...

you should only offer it when members are wanting to cancel,,,

ie.. "don't cancel stay a member for half off the regular price"

don't offer them the loyalty upfront if they are already willing to pay for it

but how do you know when they want to cancel... you cant exactly advertise "HEY YOU WANT TO CANCEL? ILL GIVE YOU 50% OFF IF YOU DONT"
