The Planet HOsting Sucks Monkey Balls!!!!

just have to say that ThePLanet Hosting has been no help these guys give shit support and when something goes they tell us to get a third part admin.. they won't block ips and then when we ask for help they send shit.. customer support people help your clients.. we are moving servers in the am.. just thought i would share the wonderfull experience i have with ThePlanet Cock Suckers

Dear ,

The load on the server is one thing. The fact that you are being attacked almost non-stop is another. Your server is down again, but not after I saw this. This is a partial list of IPs with over 10,000 failed login attempts:

12637 66.90.***.**
12864 208.66.**.**
16849 66.98.***.**
23747 67.18.***.***

For a full list do: # cat /var/log/secure* | grep Fa | cut -d: -f7 | cut -d' ' -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n

I would say you are being DDoS'd as well. Please login and do:
# netstat -np | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | awk '{if ($1> 2){print $0}}'

50 123.3.**.**
98 62.162.***.***
34 24.19.***.***
47 82.171.**.***
29 84.126.**.**

I don't know if any of these are server that belong to you but if they aren't I'm wondering why they would have so many Apache connections.

You are using 998MB of you 1G of RAM - If I stop Apache and MySQL the load drops from 30+ to under 1. I have restarted these services. Just because the server is slow to respond doesn't mean its down. You need to do some optimization and configure some security measures or the current situation will continue.

Thank You,
The DumbFuck Planet

That is standard on most servers, every day ....

I presume the logins would be for the ssh port .... They could have changed it from 22 to 4125 ( as an example ) ...

But if you are under regular attack, maybe a hardware protection would be worth considering.

Good luck meanwhile.

they could have but didn't live support is balking and ticketsupport says do it myself.. FUCK YOU PLANET...

dready 06-12-2007 06:59 PM

If you call that bad support on an unmanaged server, I suggest you find managed hosting fast.

I found The Planet would always go out of their way to help me out.

get on webair :)

I've never hosted with The Planet, and I won't. A couple of times someone had compromised one of *their* servers and began a DDoS attack from their server at my server (which at the time was hosted by EV1.net, another group of folks I hope to never do business with again...). When I contacted The Planet and tried to get to the abuse team, they asked me what my user ID was. When I told them I didn't have one and that someone was using one of their servers to attack my server, they transfered me to their sales department...

Anyway, I use ATCI now (see my sig for details) and they have been nothing short of amazing. They're prices are competitive, and their service is second to none. They even helped me move something to another hosting company when one of the websites I was hosting needed something that ATCI could not provide. Really great service!

just because you paid for a little bit of extra support doesn't make them a managed hosting company.

VexXxed 06-12-2007 09:27 PM

Why not just get them to put you behind one of their firewalls?

With unmanaged hosting & no firewall protecting you... you are pretty much SOL when you get DDOS'd.

fluffygrrl 06-12-2007 09:39 PM

Most types of DoS packets can (and should be) filtered at the exchange point, really. Even if it's unmanaged, that doesn't mean you just plug the box directly into the Internets. That's not unmanaged, that's unsane.

potter 06-12-2007 11:33 PM

So you have an unmanaged server which isn't being managed? Yeah, that can be trouble.

chaze 06-12-2007 11:47 PM

Go managed! www.dwhs.com

dougeetx 06-13-2007 12:41 AM

Go ahead and do this combination! Go to Server BEach (check sig) and then get Easy SErver Management to manage your servers. Great combo!

HunkyLuke 06-13-2007 02:41 AM

managed is the way to go, your server gets configured for high traffic and is monitored for strange behavior like that...if anything strange is detected we automatically check the server and fix things proactively: http://chilihost.com/hot.php

fatpat 06-13-2007 06:43 AM

been w/ the planet for years and never had problems...but i think managed is way to go for you
