Hostgator

I dont post much but i have seen people adver hostgator on this board, yes its a cheap host and good for small projects like splogs etc, but they now have a limit on the amount of files are you are allowed to have on the server, dedicated and all, they say 200gb but only allowed to have 50k files, sounds like alot until you run scripts like gallery, wordpress etc and it eats up real quick, just figured i would give you a heads up.

Good headsup.

While my shared plans do not host media files such as videos/mp3's etc to save on CPU usage, there is no limit on static file size :)

Dedicated plans have no limits other than the total HDD usage :)

stay away from them. they'll disable you without warning. if you go with shared, have fun with the other thousands of sites on the same server.

Since I'm one of the people that does use and promote Hostgator I felt compelled to respond to this. Here is a discussion on the HG boards about this:

It sounds like you have the $14.95/mo. shared plan. On shared accounts, they monitor the Inodes(#files & dirs) and the amount CPU you use. Since the box is a shared resource with multiple users, it has to be monitored in order to prevent one user from hogging all the resources, and screwing everybody else on the server at the same time. The things they look are spelled out in the TOS. If you have lots of tiny files, run lots of PHP scripts and have many SQL DB's, and get 500k hits per day on your sites, the shared accounts are not for you and they will tell you so like any responsible host should. The fact that they warn users about resource use, or force them to upgrade or leave if their needs dictate, show that they know how to run a shared server environment and they are taking care of their users who follow the rules...

And by the way, these limits do no apply to $75 semi-ded, or dedicated accounts which you wrongly stated.

There is a "well-known" host on this board that is perfect for you.

1) They don't monitor their shared servers very well, and let users do their thing, eventually crashing the server.
2) They don't have phone support for their "low-end" customers".
3) They'll ignore the problem until it's posted on GFY and users make a big stink.
4) They'll eventually reboot the server till the next time.
5) A bevy of clueless sig-whores will get on and tell you how wonderful this host is , and how they NEVER have problem.

Sounds like the place for you.... :winkwink:

I was with them for a long time. In the beg they sucked big time. Now that they have all there support in the states things seem to be running smoothly. They're the best host by far in my dealings with hosting companies.

Actually, since their dedicated boxes use Cpanel like the shared accounts, it would be easy to move your current environment/settings/accounts over to a dedicated box. Their cheapest box is $175 with no conract or setup.
