Brisbane, Australia.

I've got it up to about 3000x5000, but it gets a bit noisy at that size.. how big were you chasing?

Catalyst 06-11-2007 09:12 PM

I love that pic.. is it an HDR?

Not HDR'd or photoshopped in any way - direct scan off the chrome :)

18 minutes, F11 @ 35MM on the X-Pan 2

HDRs have their place, but I find the results are much more satisfying if you can do it 'the old way' :)

Catalyst 06-11-2007 09:23 PM

Yea.. I am just getting to HDR.. and I really love them.. I tryed them like a year ago.. but finally I got the style of them...

Lots of hard work to get that balance where the photo still stands on its own without looking fake.. good work on the practice :D

Catalyst 06-11-2007 09:46 PM

see.. I like a bit of the fake.. but not too much..

last weekend..

GrouchyAdmin 06-11-2007 10:44 PM

Very pretty.

I feel slightly scared that I knew it was Brisbane, without ever going there, or having checked your profile. Good mate of mine is from Narrabundah.

Thanks for the great pic; I only wish I could size it for my crappy 1280x800 LCD without my screen being mostly black! :thumbsup

SilentKnight 06-11-2007 11:11 PM

Fabulous shot there, Quantum.

But one question.

With an 18-min exposure, wouldn't the stars cause streaks? How'd you avoid that?

quantum-x 06-11-2007 11:23 PM

Double size-

Hey mate :) Good to see you drop by ;)
That night was actually overcast - thought the sky wasn't going to turn out..
The clouds were low enough to mute the stars, but not enough to cast too much of a great hue :)

Lucky timing i guyess :)

Catalyst 06-12-2007 12:21 AM

You have some great work also quantum.. you on flickr or where can I see some more of it?

I can see some streaking in the larger shot, although to me it doesn't look like 18 mins worth :)

Mutt 06-12-2007 12:23 AM

gorgeous photo as usual. why you going offline for a month?

BigBen 06-12-2007 12:26 AM

Killer shot. How about 1920x1200?

rowan 06-12-2007 12:33 AM

q-x, do you do any noise reduction on your long exposure night shots? (Either in-camera dark frame, or NR algo in post)

d00t 06-12-2007 12:36 AM

hehe you can see my place from that pic!

I think you're seeing dust and scratches there ;) I was kinda lazy with the scan.

I don't use any noise reduction normally. I mainly shoot on ISO50 for pano shots, or ISO200 on digital, so I've never had any major noise issues...

Moving to France ;)
Thanks for the compliments ;)

If you're brave, you can hit up
http://www.ninjito.com/dump/ - go through the dated folders.
As a word of warning, there's a lot of shit dumped in this directory ;)

Ah, I made the wrong assumption that it was shot on the 1Ds... was curious whether that sensor was any better on long exposure shots. My Mark II shows white speckles everywhere without dark frame subtraction enabled (which is as annoying as hell when you've just had the shutter open for 45 mins...)

Yeah, the *ds's have a habit of getting hot pixels w/o the noise reduction turned on. I used to always shoot with it on, but likeyou say, got bored waiting for 20 minutes just to see a photo. I did make me patient though ;)

Anna_O 06-12-2007 10:56 AM

Awesome stuff as always Quantum :thumbsup

And Richard, you're not so bad either :)

czarina 06-12-2007 11:02 AM

Both Of Them Very Nice!

I miss my little 300D, it had nice clean long exposures with no dark frame subtraction needed, so long as you exposed correctly (just like any shot). Even pushed +1 you can barely see any unwanted hot pixels. It was disappointing when I got a much higher end camera (after the 300D was stolen) only to find that night shots would now take twice as long.

I was really expecting you to be saying that some guys in black suits turned up at your door with security video showing you entering some facility and that you got 30 days in the slammer :winkwink:

Glad I was wrong and hope everything works out for you in France :thumbsup

It's a bummer - the 300/350/400D have the new image processors - the colours are much nicer, there's less noise too.

Try taking a shot on the 1Ds of vibrant red - the sensor goes nuts, it can't handle it... you get a blown out off orange :(
