Who knows CPR?

I've went back to school, and am in a pre-massage therapy program. One of the things I have to have before full admittance is community cpr certification.

I'm going to the first of two classes for it tonight, and am kind of apprehensive about it. Anyone here got their certification? If so, what are the classes like?

Edit: For the curious amongst us, no I am not leaving JaYMan Cash, and no, I am not leaving adult. But for the day that I do, I want to do something where I still have the ability to work for myself. This will meet that need.

I ohpe i can figure it out LOL
I'll take the First Aid course some day!

StuartD 06-11-2007 10:22 AM

Yup, took a course before we had our child... figured it would be good to know.
We'll take it again pretty soon just for a refresher. Especially with another one on the way.

Red Cross sponsored? Basically you just read the booklet, watch a few videos and practice on the Annie dummy. Once all that is done, should be a written and a practical test.

It's not a difficult program to complete.

I hadn't read that before. Many congrats to you and your wife, Stuart. :)

Yep, Red Cross sponsored.

I'm afraid of letting Annie die. :(

Then ask for Andy, he's probably more your speed :winkwink:

I took the course years ago. The dummie's chest is harder to move than you think. Nothing scary though.

bobbyjuly 06-11-2007 10:38 AM

anyone has links to where you can get this done?

Chris 06-11-2007 10:40 AM

uhh how many classes are they breaking the cpr into?
i do cpr class once a year and my dad is an instructor and does a class once a week

6 hour class

bl4h 06-11-2007 10:41 AM

Theres nothing to it at all

D 06-11-2007 10:43 AM

Yeah... thanks for reminding me that I need to get recertified.

the message therapy classes you're taking are probably more involved than CPR certification.

They teach you how to find the "sweet spot" for chest compressions, and how to properly breath into someone's lungs.

After that, it's just a matter of remembering how many chest compressions to how many breaths. You'll be fine.

I need to get recertified..been too long

CPR and first aid - saved my youngest child thanks to this knowledge

Aussie-Mark 06-11-2007 11:00 AM

I did a first aid and cpr course last month, the cpr section has changed alot since i last did it
good thing to get updated on, also learnt the stats on how many people come out of recieving cpr normal, and how many become veggies. I'd suggest not looking this up if you have kids.

Violetta 06-11-2007 03:35 PM

been too long since i practiced that stuff :(

Axeman 06-11-2007 03:43 PM

Worth having and the classes are easy. CPR is the easy one. The First aid classes are a bit more of a pain in the ass.

baddog 06-11-2007 03:46 PM

I used to be cerified regularly. No need these days, but I still remember how to save a life if I felt so inclined.

the biggest changes are the rate of compressions to breaths.

It's been decided that its more important to compress than to breath while you wait for the paramedics to arrive. That pumping the oxygen in the blood around is key. So they upped the compressions to breaths from 15-2 to 30-2.

And if you were/are afraid to give mouth to mouth due to it being a stranger and maybe catching a disease or something, that you can do a ton of good just by doing the compressions and not doing any breaths at all while waiting for the paramedics.

very nice guys!

fuzebox 06-11-2007 04:16 PM

CPR is the easiest one to get... At least compared to all the other first aid and lifesaving certs :winkwink: (Was a qualified lifeguard at some point).

Michaelious 06-11-2007 04:17 PM

I know a bit about it.

I just got home from the first of what is supposed to be two 4 hour classes. I don't think it will last that long tomorrow night though. We have to go through infant cpr, and the first aid, I believe.

Kevin Marx 06-11-2007 08:22 PM

My first job was as a lifeguard.. I have taken this class like 10 times (and the first aid also)... boring.. but informative. More people should take it.

Pete-KT 06-11-2007 08:23 PM

I used to have it but i think it expires every 5 years
