This Sopranos Debacle A First in TV History?

seems like this is one of the great debacles in TV history. I can't remember a beloved TV series ending and pissing off its fans like this. Can you remember any great TV series ending with a last show so disappointing that it angered fans? I can't.

Babagirls 06-10-2007 09:32 PM

the finale of "Roseanne" back in the day really pissed a lot of fans off but nothing in comparison to the sopranos.

Jim_Gunn 06-10-2007 09:37 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if David Chase gets his ass kicked by some crazed fan next time he stops at his favorite coffee shop or Jewish deli. And he would deserve it too.

stickyfingerz 06-10-2007 09:37 PM

Seinfeld.....

what happened in the finale of Roseanne?

GatorB 06-10-2007 09:38 PM

Well it wasn't an ending but when they brought Bobby Ewing back to Dallas with the "It was all a dream" shit that was pretty lame.

Paraskass 06-10-2007 09:38 PM

I've never seen a single Sopranos episode.

Reading about all this let down really makes me happy.

Exactly what I was about to say - they could have done much better imo.

Ya that came to mind for me too.

Mutt 06-10-2007 09:40 PM

actually the only big finale of a TV show I even remember is MASH and it was watched by everybody and it was a tear jerker. most hit shows stay on the air too long and by that time nobody cares about the last show.

that was not a series finale though - it was a cliffhanger ending to one of the seasons and the first show of the next season was what pissed everybody off. that's a show that then stayed on too long and I have no clue how they wrapped it up.

tehHinjew 06-10-2007 09:43 PM

that 70's show ended like that
they were all sitting together and next thing you know it was the countdown to 1980 on new years eve
as soon as it hit 0 screen went off

Yes I said that. Actually what happened was Patrick Duffy wanted more cash and so he left the show. So they kiled him off. Blew him up I believe. So no doubt he's dead. The next season happened as if Bobby is dead. Well the ratings sank without him he was still unemployed so he came back. Well now you have to explain how a guy who been dead for a year if now alive and in the shower? "Oh it was a dreram" Which means everything that happended the season before didn't happen. The series was cancelled shortly thereafter.

There were 9 seasons. In (I believe) Season 7, her husband Dan had a heart attack. The epsidoes from Season 7-9 showed that he recovered and all was well. In the finale, she explains how Dan never recovered, and he actually died. She continued to say that seasons 7-9 was a book that she wrote after Dan died, and that she was basically writing about how she thought things would be if he had, indeed, lived.

The last few seasons of the show sucked reallly bad, and for her to say it never happend, and that it was all just a book she was writing, pissed a lot of fans off. It was as if she was justifying why the last few seasons sucked and it was a totally out-the-blue ending.

same here. :( I'm a fan of the show and I have seasons 1-3 right now (gotta pick up 4 & 5 still) and I really could care less if I ever got season 8 or 9 on dvd.

Mutt 06-10-2007 10:04 PM

damn i had no idea that's how Roseanne ended. Another show that stayed on too long so most people don't even know how it ended.

i liked it in its first few years - it was the most realistic family sitcom ever made.

ya, I agree. I watch seasons 1-3 on dvd all the time. i need to get season 4 next. those are the best seasons of Roseanne, the most realistic in my opinion.

Most shows are good for about 6-7 years max. Then they just go downhill. There are some exceptions. Not many but some.

Far-L 06-10-2007 10:25 PM

This is one of the reasons people revere "The Prisoner"...

Harvey Birdman!

SPACE GLIDER 06-10-2007 10:42 PM

The worst ending was probably "St. Elsewhere" where it was revealed that the entire show was a dream in an autistic kid's mind.

"Newhart" had the BEST ending of a TV show in my opinion.

damn, i was the hugest St Elsewhere fan and I guess it was another show that faded away cuz I don't even remember that ending - Dr. Westphal's kid was autistic and that's how it ended? Glad I never watched it cuz I'd have been totally pissed at that ending.

I still think it's the best TV series of all time.

TampaToker 06-10-2007 10:50 PM

Oz and Carnival both from HBO :disgust

Wonder how HBO would like if ever person who watched the show cancelled tomorrow. I been saying they would do the ending where no one is sure on what the hell happened and for sure they did that. From what I was reading the guy who directed is the kind of guy who likes to piss people off and never give people what they think. Well for sure he did that here, I agree what a shitty ending for sure.

dude, westphal's universe is HUGE, check out my link above

MissMina 06-10-2007 11:15 PM

My mom was telling me they interviewed Chase and he said either you will love the ending or hate it. And to get it you have to read in between the lines and should understand it from other episodes the song he played, him being with his family at the end etc etc. We never found out what happens to Sil, what Paulie was looking and acting strange about etc. So many loose ends. I think he set it up for the movie to really possibly tie up loose ends there.. More $$$ All I know is I was watching and the screen turned black... Not happy with the ending at all. Not satisfied.

Well Dunn 06-10-2007 11:19 PM

what was the let down, he died ...that was expected. remember when bobby and him were talking about hunting back in the day...he said they probably just black out" and never hear it coming....that guy coming from the bathroom shot him while he was watching meadow come in =/ they left it realy open though, so who knows. but thats the only thing that makes sense.

madawgz 06-10-2007 11:20 PM

it was a pretty bad ending :\

Deadwood just didn't get picked up again. I really let down on that one...waiting for the new season to start..and they say it's over with a regular episode.

that was awesome....i like how it ended

Doctor Dre 06-12-2007 12:50 AM

I don't really think this was a bad ending... the whole family survives, pretty much every big hole in the story is closed... live goes on as usual, tony wins and leotardo looses.

The last 2 mins were good for curiosity, but it wasn't anything serious.

I laughed out loud when I realized this was over.

Turboface 06-12-2007 12:52 AM

I didn't get into Six Feet Under until the last season or so, but I have to say that that was the best series finale I have ever seen. They did a brilliant job. It's a shame that the Sopranos didn't go out with the same style and class.

I am shocked that HBO would let their biggest and longest running series go out like this. The only explanation is that there is probably merit to the Sopranos movie rumors, which I think would be incredible.

We shall see.

CuriousToyBoy 06-12-2007 01:10 AM

I always thought the end of "The Wonder Years" was pretty good. So was "Cheers" from memory.

The last 2 seasons were lousy. It's as if they handed over the writing to Oprah. The last shows just capped off a totally pathetic final season so fans are projecting their 100% of their disgust at the ending.

evildick 06-12-2007 06:58 AM

The series finale of Manimal really disappointed me.

cool1 06-12-2007 07:03 AM

was cool, though a surprize, that Christopher would come back from the dead as a cat

Young 06-12-2007 07:23 AM

I've been a fan since day one and I wasn't disappointed in the ending at all.

I understood that this was a Family Drama first, then a Crime Family Drama second and I got exactly what I wanted. Closure on Tony and his family.

tranza 06-12-2007 07:38 AM

I can't wait to see the last episode....

I thought that was one of the best endings ever. The last seasons sucked because they were suppose to suck. Most tv shows dont plan on ending 2 years before they do. Roseanne did that and I thought she did it well.
