MP3 Officially dead as a format!
 

The licensing for MP3 patents has completely changed. Thomson Multimedia, owner of certain patents has ceased providing free access to their technology for Mp3 decoders.

Here is the pricing schedule

If any of you are operating streaming audio or encoding anything into MP3 format, please note that this format has officially shot itself in the foot. All "free" mp3 decoders (Winamp, realaudio, etc,) will now be subject to a per user licensing fee.

Okay...it's not too often I challenge someone about something they mention on an internet dicussion forum but I am convinced that your sister cannot write an Mp3 decoder.

Anyone who says MP3 is dead is smoking crack.. The license is either 75c per player OR 50-70k one time.. All the big players in the MP3 player market are already licensed.. So what makes you think the format is going away?

I didn't read the whole site, so I am not sure which specific patents they own, but I doubt their ability to wipe out MP3s.

JPG and GIF... It's only the LZW compression scheme that is subject to fees and that only in certain situations, I think, like server licensing.

Mpeg4 audio is here, licence free, and it sounds better. The Mpeg3 codec is fucking 10 years old. Get with the program.
