unknown email virus?
 

I think probably many of you have got tons of spamming emails everyday, and some of them contain virus. I got them too, but that's not the part that annoying me. The strange thing is, some of those virus emails came from someone I know. After I contact them, they all told me they never sent any email like that. And I also receive some 'returned emails' that supposely are sent by me. I swear I never sent any of them and most of the recipient email addresses are unknown to me. I have Norton Anti-Virus installed and the virus database is recently updated. And I can't find any virus on my machine.

Isn't that strange? Anyone has similar experience? Do you know what's going on and how to fix that? I don't want to get spammed, and I certainly don't want to spam others.

Jinn, it sounds like a common W32/Klez virus.

It can and does spoof e-mail return adresses so it looks like its comming from a friend. he or she doesnt have to be infected for it to use thier addy.

The from header in an email is merely symbolic, you can set it to whatever you want.

It looks like a returned email but it really isn't. Although, if you download the attached "email" to see what exactly it was that you supposedly sent your friend, the virus gets into your sysem in the download and infects your machine.

Thank heavens that real viruses don't act that way. Could you imagine getting a visit from your mom, only she's not your mom, but a virus who looks like your mom to trick you? It's too scary to think about.

http://www.symantec.com and run their online virus scanner, it will walk you thru any repairs etc you need... and then go BUY Norton Systemworks 2002 Pro which also has their Antivirus program included.

You won't HAVE that problem again once you install Norton.

Thanks for the info, guys. Currently I have Norton SystemWorks 2002 installed and scan all the incoming emails. And it can detect and delete all the virus files. So my question is: am I actually sending out those emails from my computer to my friends? Does my computer still have this virus even if I can SystemWorks at work?

Are you SURE you have the email scanning enabled in Norton?! Check that first and then go over to their site and run their onsite scanner.

It takes some time to run since its running across the net but: any known viruses canNOT spoof a scan running form another machine. Also as someone else mentioned, Klez... read up on it at the symantec site and see if any of the things - files etc it mentions are on your system.

Just having Norton AV installed doesn't protect you unless you have all the auto scans set to load on bootup tho. Get over there and burn the time to scan your system. (It doesn't hurt to do it monthly even with having AV on your system)
