huge breakthrough with movie rentals just happened

netflix is offering a way to download and watch movies from your pc, just saw a commercial for it

this is the start of the extinction of brick and mortar movie stores, there is no real need for them anymore, this is much more efficent

Spunky 06-03-2007 09:11 PM

Not really..sure a little bit might be lost but I still prefer a large screen and sound system when I watch movies

svideo cable + audio out on a laptop connected to my tv does just fine for me.

MetaMan 06-03-2007 09:14 PM

I do not seeing it changing that much, people who are downloading it to their PC are already doing it for free.

I cannot stand watching a movie on my comp, I KNOW I KNOW S-video output, not everyone has it and also movies will always be a collectors item.

I do not see the conventional movie store being oblitorated.

Spuny...ever heard of a media center? you do know that signal you get from your cableco that goes on your large screen and your sound system is the same digital signal you get off od a DVD player right? yes even a HiDef one.

you can, in fact store it and burn it yourself....so is it so hard to think that XXX VOD via the net in full HD resolution without having to get up off yer ass isnt already here?

It isnt the begining of the end really more ilke the begining of the middle of the end...store revenues ar down 30% from last year.

Silly Guy 06-03-2007 09:26 PM

...yet

there are so many people without broadband or even a computer

crockett 06-03-2007 09:29 PM

I used to have stock in Gamez n Flix and they were talking about doing the same a year or so ago.

webmasterchecks 06-03-2007 09:43 PM

no reason to have to drive to the video store, if all i have to do is push a few buttons

instant gratification

Pornwolf 06-03-2007 09:46 PM

I've been watching the streaming versions of movies using Netflix on my 32" office LCD for a good 6 months or so. It looks damn good.

i ripped my whole dvd library to my media comp and i stream movies through my 360. i never have to switch discs. so if i could download ... now that i think about it the xbox live already does this but the movie selection sucks. either way its a great idea.

phasic 06-03-2007 09:49 PM

Used to manage a blockbuster in my home town, both my store and the closest one closed down.. Lots of movie galleries closing too. Next 5 years won't be a brick an mortar movie rental place in the states.

I disagree... Netflix is getting their ass kicked by Blockbuster Total Access, so they had to come up with something so THEY don't become extinct!

i disagree, this is first the commercial release of a brand new huge concept. view any movie you want at the push of button from your home. why do we need brick and mortar stores anymore? this concept saves you the drive to the store, browsing for video, and the drive back

Some people shoplift a DVD from wal-mart others obtian it legally by paying for it.

Even the most basic of video cards have s-video. Most of DVI which some TV have orif you TV has HDMI you can get a DVI to HDMI adapter.

People like me who rent don't "collect" moveies. We rent them and take them back to the store anyways.

Netflix had this idea planned before they even rented the first movie. It's obvious that this is the way of the future. As much as they like to tout that HD-DVD and/or blu-ray are the next great thing they are really only temporary. Within 20 years the whole concept of a "video store" where you leave your house to go rent a movie and have to return it will seem strange and old fashioned to those just being born today.

TheJimmy 06-04-2007 10:13 AM

pssst - unbox videos are also available for rent at amazon -- I JUST found this the other night

http://www.amazon.com/Office-Space/d...0939759&sr=8-2

;)

Dirty F 06-04-2007 10:17 AM

Its like Rapidshare has been doing for quite a while already. You download the movie and watch it on your computer :)

jpwhits 06-04-2007 10:19 AM

This will kill off rental places just like amazon has killed off book stores.

Xenophage 06-04-2007 10:21 AM

Just the ever changing buisness model

faster cheaper better

LiveDose 06-04-2007 10:24 AM

Contrary to popular 'net' belief:
-not everyone has computers
-not everyone has an internet connection
-not everyone has high speed internet connection
-not everyone is an internet junkie who wants to sit in front of their computer and download or stream Hollywood movies in order to watch them.

Now the kicker, most people watch or rent movies at least once in a while or more. Brick and mortar video stores aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

WebairGerard 06-04-2007 10:29 AM

I have seen 2 blockbusters and a mom and pop shut down in the area in last 2 months. I NEVER think of going to rent a flick anymore. Either download or pay per view.

stickyfingerz 06-04-2007 10:32 AM

Vongo.com duh been a member for a year or so..

thebossxxx 06-04-2007 10:32 AM

This nes was just a matter of time!

riddler 06-04-2007 10:59 AM

to bad netflix streaming part sucks ass its all old movies so far, they dont have alot of good movies yet, only time will tell though.

slapass 06-04-2007 11:24 AM

The movie industry and the music industry need to solve the internet. they are being bled dry by pirating and making it easier to buy is one way to get people to comply if it is not a big deal to them. Would you pay $2 a movie to always get one that works and avoid viruses and stuff like that?

But are they going to cram 50 commercials into the front end and their own spyware?

the alchemist 06-04-2007 11:27 AM

That's not new at all...

We know that netflix announced this 6 months ago maybe longer and have had it running for at least 2-3 months maybe more, but let the guy have his day in the sun with this "new" announcement.

Tom_PM 06-04-2007 11:42 AM

I've seen lots of recent Tivo commercials talking about how with tivo you can rent them off of Amazon.com.

I did rent an HD movie off of my DVR once, and while it was decent, there were a few highly pixelated spots. Not bad though for a couple of bucks I suppose.

flashfire 06-04-2007 11:45 AM

whats the quality like though? on netflix I mean

Rodent 06-04-2007 12:58 PM

Netflix sucks, Blockbusters stuff is way better....hell I can take my stuff i got in the mail and turn it in at any Blockbuster store and not pay a dime when I pick something new out to take home.

ADL Colin 06-04-2007 01:01 PM

I have Apple TV. Haven't actually downloaded and watched a movie yet. Been using it just for playing music so far.

tiger 06-04-2007 01:09 PM

Movie theaters will be dead soon if they don't make some big changes.

IllTestYourGirls 06-04-2007 01:15 PM

doesnt tivo allow you do dl to your box now?

Then why bother getting anything through the mail at all and just go to the store like you always could for the last 25 years?

You do realize people are using their computers as media centers and content is actually being watch on their TVs.

RawAlex 06-04-2007 01:30 PM

They found a way of making money without lars fucking it up?

D 06-04-2007 01:30 PM

There are several networks that have been developing similar outlets for the last couple of years.

Netflix might have the brandability to grab a significant part of the market, but we're going to see some other (some new) names surface in the next few months.
