In an interview with the Globe and Mail, Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to target Europe with missiles, including potentially nuclear weapons, in a dramatic escalation of his Cold War-style showdown with the United States.

Mr. Putin, in an interview at his country residence outside Moscow, said he considers U.S. plans to build an eastern European anti-missile site to shoot down Iranian missiles a provocation aimed at Russia.

Asked what he might do to retaliate, he said he would return Russia to the Cold War status where missiles were aimed at European targets.

"It is obvious that if part of the strategic nuclear potential of the United States is located in Europe, and according to our military experts will be threatening us, we will have to respond," he said.



"What kind of steps are we going to take in response? Of course, we are going to get new targets in Europe."

He suggested that this could include powerful nuclear-capable weapons.

"What kind of means will be used to hit the targets that our military believe are potential threats to the Russian federation? This is a purely technical issue, be it ballistic missiles or cruise missiles, or some kinds of novel weapons systems - this is a purely technical issue."

Mr. Putin held a three-hour dinner interview with the Globe and Mail along with one newspaper from each of the G-8 nations. He defended his nation's economic policies and tough restrictions on political dissent, repeatedly criticized the U.S. as dangerous and hypocritical, and acknowledged that Russia needs to rid itself of corruption.

I read this news... Everyone hates the USA, but Russia still hates us the most. Europe just likes us.

All of this crap about nuclear bombs and stuff is all just a bunch of high school bullies talking shit out of their ass. Russia can never launch against Europe or anyone else; If the fallout doesn't kill 'em the follow up attack from the US would.

The only ones who will be able to use nuclear bombs will be our terrorist friends.

This is more about balancing the power...bully to bully.

The START I nuclear treaty ends in 2 years, there is no other treaty against nuclear proliferation signed, so I wouldn't be so sure.

I really hope the next US administration will value international diplomacy more, because this one brought the old demons back to life.

I'm more worried about their outdated nuclear installations in the north, they haven't cleaned up. Its a ticking bomb, anything goes wrong and hole North-Europe become polluted.

the Russian mob has control of all that stuff. if Putin wants to use it he will have to buy it from them.

Didn't the Russians already have missles pointed at Europe ?

The real problem is poland. Putin tries to keep russia's dominions, like for example poland. Some countries want to enter in NATO, and with a some amercian defense in poland and other countries like that (i'm sure some baltics countries would agree too), this entrance will go to facts. Putin tries to keep his empire because this problem decrease his influence in this area.
Iran and cold war are absolutely not the real problem here.
But i can understand that some european countries don't trust russia.

This guy knows what he is saying.

It is strategy, yes a lot of countries frown upon the US at the moment, he is playing a game. By threatening to aim missiles at Europe because the US has a presence. He will create an atmosphere in which the Europeans will only hate the US more, because he does it in retaliation to a US action.

Just the way I see it.
