Best road sign in the US.

It's about 5 miles from my house in Troy, Michigan...:1orglaugh

I lived near Beaver College. But they had to change their name because parents researching "beaver" would always end up at a porn site.

DrGuile 08-26-2002 01:38 PM

there's a place in downtown montreal called "Beaver Hall" (also a street)

....its not as fun as it sounds... :1orglaugh

This isn't a "funny" sign but a quaint story perhaps... oftentimes you'll see the "Trucks: No Jake Brake" sign around in residential areas, telling truckers to not use their Jake brakes, which effectively use the drivetrain's inertia to overcome the engine's compression to slow the truck without excessive wear on the service brakes (drums/disks) and this is pretty damn loud.

Well, Jake Brake is a trademarked name from Jacobson Compression Brakes, and they have successfully sued many local municipalities for using the trademark and not a more generic "compression brake" term. They actually have a form on their website where you can alert them to signs with their trademark and they will get them taken down.

There's a little town in the middle of the corn and bean fields near me that has a sign that reads "Stay an hour, stay a day, STAY FOREVER." I think it's kind of annoying, but my daughter says she drives through there real fast - reminds her too much of something out of a Steven King nove.

Similar principle, but this is a system inside the engine itself.

No, the compression brake is independent of the service brakes and the transmission, and is adjustable for 2, 4 or 6 cylinders. Some work by cutting spark, others by cutting fuel and there are other ways to go about it as well. Toss "compression brake" into google and you'll find all the info you need.

I have seen that sign numerous times I just can't ever remember where I've seen it along the highway. I drive from the chicago burbs to kansas city quite frequently so you are prob. correct that its right outside Kenosha on 90/94. Gives me a good laugh every time I see it.

MrBrian 08-27-2002 12:58 PM

if you take the north route to the grand canyon from vegas, you drive past the virgin mountains to mt bang...heh :)

my friends dad saw the pics we took and was like "whyd you take pics of street signs" lol
