How Do people Live Without Tivo/DVR?

I've become absolutely addicted to DVR. I can barely remember TV schedules anymore because of it.

It's great because there's nothing like finally getting to watch the latest episode of Scrubs on a Saturday afternoon or recording something, going out and having a life, then coming back to watch a couple TV shows.

Not to mention the pause/rewind feature....

The downside of DVR addiction...I have a shitload of shows recorded that I haven't gotten around to watching yet.

Jace 06-01-2007 01:30 PM

in all honesty, I don't know how people can't live without TIVO...I have tried most of th major DVR's out there and they SUCK

there is NOTHING better than Directivo.....a Directv unit with Tivo built in and dual tuners to boot

ADL Colin 06-01-2007 01:30 PM

No shit. Without a DVR I don't think i'd watch any TV besides football. I'm never in the mood to watch tv when the shows I like are on. Hell, they seem to be on at the same time anyway.

MikeVega 06-01-2007 01:31 PM

I love them .. I have Tivo downstairs and a HD DVR in my office from the cable company. the one from the cable company is better then the tivo because it can record 2 programs at once while i watch another. I like the Tivo Menu better but the extra tuners in the cable box makes up for the not so nice menu. I'll be putting the cable DVR's on all the HD tv's in my house. 2 42" plasma's and 2 32" LCD's .. it's custom TV .. it's the best

you just didn't get a dual tuner tivo, which sucks, because there is nothing better :)

Sosa 06-01-2007 01:32 PM

I want to pick up the hd/dvr from directv to add to my system but that $300 price blows

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 06-01-2007 01:33 PM

let me explain how I live without Tivo or DVR....

I LIVE WITHOUT TV!

Pretty complicated huh? Television is just about the biggest waste of time there is...

I use the DVR service through Cox Cable, it's only like an extra 10-12 bucks a month.

I would love to have dual tuners in it though...

D 06-01-2007 01:35 PM

I just wouldn't watch T.V. without one.

Agree, I watch about 2-3 hours a week max.

damn, we have tivo through directv, it is $4 a month with the dual tuners

there is nothing that compares to the tivo software

damn, might be time for a change, hehe

My DVR was acting up on me and freezing for the past two weeks. I finally got my new unit yesterday and need to replace the old one. Having a DVR and then not having one is like going back to 14.4 dialup from a DSL connection...

Peaches 06-01-2007 01:42 PM

The TiVo is the greatest invention since the microwave.

Totally agree. I got Tivo a couple years ago when I was working from 2pm-11pm so I could record all the prime time shows I was missing but I never liked how you couldn't record a show but still watch something else. I just got a new 37" Panasonic Plasma HDTV a couple weeks ago and got the HD-DVR from the cable company and it rocks but like you said the menu is pretty basic and not as easy to navigate as the Tivo but the other features make up for it.

pornguy 06-01-2007 01:44 PM

I actually can not figure out how you CAN live with TV.

amazing.

ztik 06-01-2007 01:44 PM

I don't really watch TV so no need

um, jesus, when did you have tivo last? 2001?

you can record two shows at the same time AND watch something from your list

and the features on the tivo WAY overshadow the cable companies dvr's

in FACT, a LOT of cable companies just signed a deal with TIVO to start distributing tivo instead of that crappy dvr they offer....too many people love tivo, but no major companies are offering it anymore becuase they thought they could pull it off themselves, but they didn't really realize how insanely advanced the tivo software is....but they are realizing it now as all the complaints come in

for now you would have to order a directv tivo unit from somewhere other than directv, because they cancelled their deal with tivo but still allow people to subscribe through them

BUT, that is changing and tivo is working out a new deal with directv and releasing another directivo unit soon, thank god!

Jace 06-01-2007 01:49 PM

ah, it is comcast that just sealed the deal with tivo, they are expecting their first unit soon

StuartD 06-01-2007 01:49 PM

Never had it... never tried it... haven't even seen one.

I don't really watch television. I catch what ever I need to see online and that's enough for me.

I'm generally too busy to sit and watch the boob tube.

Penthouse Tony 06-01-2007 01:57 PM

I love my dual tuner TiVo!

OY 06-01-2007 01:59 PM

TIVO/DVR is the best thing since the cheese slicer...

Peaches 06-01-2007 02:01 PM

I gave my Dad one a couple of years ago. In 45 years, it's the only time he's called me several months after giving him something and thank me again :)

Ah, in that case I'll stick with Cox, hehe

I haven't had any actual problems with it yet (unlike their On Demand service, ugh)

Evil E 06-01-2007 02:22 PM

I don't have cable :)

i don't see how anyone in the world can stand cable, it is so high priced and just not good at all

with my directv we get like 250 channels, dual tuner tivo AND xm radio all for under $50

WebairGerard 06-01-2007 02:33 PM

don't have one. i am not a big TV watcher so if i miss something i don't usually care.

Bossman 06-01-2007 02:33 PM

I have hooked my computer to the TV... now I can watch shows/movies and be on the computer at the same time. And best of all it was bloody cheap (beside the TV) - only need a cable from the computer, and a wireless keybord + mouse :glugglug

eroswebmaster 06-01-2007 02:38 PM

Scrubs is one of my favorite shows on t.v.

Redmanthatcould 06-01-2007 02:55 PM

I don't even own a tv - haven't for the last several years.

Rochard 06-01-2007 02:59 PM

I rarely watch TV. When I do it's usually what ever is on the History channel.

I do watch scrubs, but I buy the DVD. Not much else.

It's funny hearing everyone talk about "Heros" and "Lost" and I have no idea what they are even about.

same here and sadly enough, I own the first 3 seasons on DVD and yet, still record/watch repeats...I think I may have a problem :)

Long time no chat man, how's it going? We need to get together for lunch again or something...you'll have to meet the new better half...hehe

gornyhuy 06-01-2007 03:03 PM

Simple enough: Don't watch tv.

I bought the Tivo II when it first came out. I was just happy i could network it to my wireless at the time. The software is so much better but with the Cable box i can upgrade whenever i want ( i don't own it) and it's billed right into my cable bill. It's also one less component i have to have hooked up and records the HD really nice. I'm not sure how the new Tivo's work but I also hated having the little wires that would relay the channel changing on the Tivo. You have to remember that I don't have Direct TV i have Cable so it's not built into the receiver ..

LiveDose 06-01-2007 03:09 PM

I have been asking myself the same question since getting it 6 months ago.

I actually waste less time moving my schedule around and rushing around now and can just enjoy my shows without commercials. Also 'pause' is nice... hehe

yeah, it is a different world just having tivo on it's own....it is NOTHING like tivo stand alone
