FACT: Al Gore never claimed he invented the internet

Do people not know this, or is it just a funny joke to keep going? In any event, it was the Republican spin machine that created this controversy just in time for the 2000 election.

The actual quote from a 1999 appearance on Wolf Blitzer:

"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

How the Republicans spun it:

"That crackpot Al Gore is now claiming to have invented the internet!"

Every time you repeat it, you are doing work for the Repukes.

Gore/Hillary in 2008 :)

This is just a silly rumor Al himself started. He just doesn't want all the fame and glory that comes with being the inventor of the internet. Mr. Gore is a very humble man.

applebee 06-01-2007 12:30 AM

I think Gore invented Global Warming just so he could campaign against it.

L-Pink 06-01-2007 12:32 AM

That's not what Al told me .....

How do you expect Republicans to win if they have to stick to the facts?

lmao yah I was thinkin the same thing, this guy cant even get his biased post right. he uses a quote that says the same thing the op said he never said, wow confusing. its a bold strategy!

spunkmaster 06-01-2007 01:10 AM

Gore also said the US Must take out Saddam back in 2000 and now he has a new book bashing Bush for "taking out Saddam" !

In 2002 Hildabeast clinton said that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction (Which Bush never said) and she verified this by her own intel from Clinton's people so there was no way Bush could be telling us wrong info.

Now she is telling us Bush Lied !

She's also been on the warpath against adult products, adult language and adult content and we have a bunch of adult webmasters rooting for her !

There are three bills pending in congress right now against adult commerce and all three are sponsored by democrats and Hildabeast is for all of them.

Finally, who was it that tried to outlaw adult websites and a conservative supreme court struck it down ?

President Bill Clinton !

Wow, a bunch of uneducated hicks in this thread. The definition of "initiative" used in this context is taking the first steps in beginning something. In Al Gore's case, pushing for internet development funding while a member of congress.

President Bill Clinton !

That happened at the start of the internet boom era. At the time, applying the same standards to the internet as brick and mortar seemed like the sensible thing to do.

Of course as the internet quickly developed we would learn that it needed to be handled in all new ways. That many of the "real life" policies were not going to work.

So no, I don't hold it against Clinton. I think regardless of who was in control of Congress and who was President this would have gotten passed anyway.

Bills that he sponsored when he was Senator are directly responsible for the internet the way it is now. The internet has been around since the late 60's it wasn't until 1994 that is became the internet we know today. 1994 is less than a few years after he sponsored these bills. Not a coincidence.

It's funny how republicans continue to bash him on this yet say nothing about republicans Senator Ted Stevens and his description of the internet as "a series of tubes."

Mr. Mojo Risin 06-01-2007 06:11 AM

That's about the only thing Republicans have to attack him with

Amazes me constantly to the thought process on this board sometimes. Democrats are the ones responsible for more censorship and attempts at censorship than anyone else period end of story.

DaddyHalbucks 06-01-2007 07:32 AM

No matter how you spin it, Al Gore was Bill Clinton's lap dog.

While Clinton was committing his many crimes such as abuse of power and obstruction of justice, Al Gore did nothing and showed absolutely no leadership.

Fuck Al Gore!

Let's see lying about receiving a blowjob from someone who is not your wife( which most of us would do ESPECIALLY if we were married to Hillary ) or lying about WMDs and costing 3500 and counting young men and women their lives needlessly. Which is worse.

lol if the only scandal Clinton had involved a bj ....

dig420 06-01-2007 08:37 AM

you people are, collectively, dumb as dirt. Gore didn't claim to invent the internet. He DID claim to be instrumental in pushing for it's development and making sure it was funded, and he is absolutely correct. He was extremely farsighted in that regard.

If you people were a little less concerned with seeming humorous in some crustly old stupid fuck sort of way that's really only clever amongst yourselves, and more concerned with what's actually been said and done, you'd make better decisions and this country wouldn't be going down the shithole like it is now.

Colbert has the current generation of Republicans pegged pretty good. You're not concerned with the truth, just 'truthiness'. If it sounds to you like it SHOULD be true, then it is. That's just intellectual laziness. The only funny thing about it is that you're proud of being willfully ignorant.

A) he didn't get "crushed"

B) In my county Gore got 60% of the vote

C) Living in Tennessee you should know that the natives are nothing more than ingnorant undereducated inbred bible thumping hypocrite morons that actually believed that Gore was going to take away their guns. That's why they voted for Bush. Same people who make minimum wage and bitched about it not going up all these years. Um DUH you voted for Bush TWICE WTF did you expect? That's how dumb they are.

Anyone that doesn't know how the government works should have their voting rights revoked.

Think it came down to more he just wasnt liked. You must be from the east, or from the hick parts. Where I live its probably 60% non natives that live here. lol No one in our area makes minimum wage. Starting wage almost everywhere is 9.00 + an hour.

Actually I'm from the western part. Actually anything outside of Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chatanooga areas are hick parts. 8% unemployment is considered a GOOD month. local wal-mart start cahsiers out at $5.65 and night stockers $6.65. The plastics factory starts out at $6.25 an hour and these are the "high paying" jobs. Unless you know someone and can get a cushy local government job.

Anyways I know for a FACT that many people voted for Bush because they actually believed Gore was going to take away their guns. Now I wonder who gave them that very erroneous idea?

tony286 06-01-2007 10:36 AM

Vinton G. Cerf, a senior vice president at MCI Worldcom and the person most often called “the father of the Internet” for his part in designing the network’s common computer language, said in an e-mail interview yesterday, “I think it is very fair to say that the Internet would not be where it is in the United States without the strong support given it and related research areas by the vice president in his current role and in his earlier role as senator.” He is talking about Al.

Also Copa has nothing to do with outlawing adult websites, it was for age verification. Which with all the free porn and bit torrents dont know if thats the worse idea.If it wasnt for the clinton years porn would not have grown the way it did. They dont support it ,they just realized there are better ways to spend tax payers money.
Let see the first big busts were under Nixon (R)
Second big ones that cost Adam & Eve one million dollars to fight were under Reagan (R)
Under clinton (d)porn has its biggest explosion
Now under the current (R) admin lets look shall we.
2257 is redone so its very vague and easy to prosecute if they choose to
The first 2257 inspections in history
Two major porn guys hit with obscenity
one webmaster hit with obscenity for stories just words
The Atty's in Nevada and Arizona were fired, one of the more reasons was neither would not go forward with adult porn cases.
Now righties, how the fuck can you say Dems are just as bad, is it a defense mechanism to save you from having to say yeah you are right .We are dumb for supporting this group.

tony286 06-01-2007 10:41 AM

The Atty's in Nevada and Arizona were fired, one of the more reasons was neither would not go forward with adult porn cases.

I meant would, not would not.

There are a couple listings both around 9.00 per hour for entry level new worker jobs. Hard to even find them listed. There are signs in nearly every business in the area with help wanted on them. Economy is rocking in this area without question.

He used the same exact wording at a speech he gave to the 1996 graduating class of M.I.T.

When he did so, there was a murmur in the audience... everyone turning to the person next to them saying "did he really just say he created the internet?"

If he didn't see the writing on the wall at that point, he should have.
