How long can cheese be unrefrigerated?

I just realized I bought a ton of shredded cheese and left it out for about 10 hours. Is it still good, does anybody know?

CosmicTang 05-31-2007 01:04 PM

i wouldn't worry. when i lived in France we never stored cheese in the fridge.

Martina Warren 05-31-2007 01:09 PM

Depends on the cheese, and the temp it was left out in.

I'm pretty sure your cheese will still be good though

Ravage 05-31-2007 01:11 PM

Is it moving? Is it slimy? If not, you should be fine.

BTW, I must say, I'm not liable if you get sick and/or die from it.

Martina Warren 05-31-2007 01:13 PM

Or Maybe not lol

foulplay 05-31-2007 01:45 PM

the cheese between my toes has been goin strong for a few months now.

Tom_PM 05-31-2007 01:54 PM

It'll be fine. I left 2 half gallons of ice cream out one night.. god that sucked ass to clean! :1orglaugh

WebTitan 05-31-2007 02:00 PM

pretty sure it depends on the kind of cheese

polish_aristocrat 05-31-2007 02:08 PM

question of the day

D 05-31-2007 02:11 PM

Pasteurized and shredded?

I'd say it's safe to simply subtract 1 day off the expiration date of the package for every hour you left it out after the first hour unrefrigerated.

So, with the info you provided, I'd say you're fast-forwarded to June 8/June 9 in the life of that cheese. Check the expiration date, and go from there.

General rule - as long as it doesn't try to crawl out of the kitchen by itself, it's eatable.

fallenmuffin 05-31-2007 02:36 PM

2 hours at room temp.

tranza 05-31-2007 02:40 PM

Was it hot outside?

SomeCreep 05-31-2007 02:41 PM

12 minutes

cj_purve 05-31-2007 02:46 PM

10 hours in the heat or 10 hours in average temp?
if its the shit supermarket shredded cheese you won't get that many chances with keeping it out of the fridge for 10 hours, but if its mostly melted or has moisture on it you might be looking at mouldy cheese in a few days.

if in doubt, throw it out!!

The shredded cheese would not be safe to eat if left at room temperature longer than two hours.

My husband left out a opened bag of shredded cheddar cheese over night. Is it still safe to eat?

The bag was unopened and new from the store and this question says opened. I put it in the fridge and will feed it to a neighbor to see what happens before I eat any.

phourt 05-31-2007 06:37 PM

depends upon the climate

StarkReality 05-31-2007 06:37 PM

Just taste it, if you still like it, it's fine. Fish and meat can be dangerous if unrefrigerated for too long, but cheese won't do any bad.
