Using "Playboy" in the domain name is a gross violation of their terms. When Playboy's legal department finds out about it - and they will find out about it - it will be shut down.

Our legal team is aware of this domain. You can't use playboy in a url.

tony286 05-31-2007 09:03 AM

that sucks on so many levels.

You truly are a idiot arent you? A prime example of how to rep a company.

Kevin Marx 05-31-2007 06:05 PM

yes you can use the words playboy.... it's no different than using the word toothpaste... a playboy (the noun) is different than Playboy (the magazine/empire)... now.. how you market it is different.. that's the key.

www-playboy.com.. you are fucked.

im-a-playboy.com... different... and most likely fine.

im-a-playboy-playmate.com... playboy playmate is trademarked... no way

shesmyplaymate.com.. good chance you are fine, as long as you don't ever address anything about playboy

shesaplaymate.com... probably not, even if your girl is a playboy playmate, they guard their stuff pretty hard

this-is-playboy.com.... tough.. probably gonna lose on that one

It all depends on the wording... then of course you have to distance yourself from the branding of playboy... so why choose the name in the first place??? the obvious choice is so you can cash in on it... therefore, you can't use it for that.

woj 05-31-2007 06:12 PM

Some people in this biz are pretty stupid, wtf was someone thinking when they registered www-playboy.com, the domain gets 0 type ins, isn't even worth the registration cost and obviously would create drama when playboy legal team discovers it...

Absolutely true, I'll never understand why people get themselves in trouble this way voluntarily...risk vs. reward calculation is shitty.

The litmus test in regards to trademarks is:

"Was the use of the term-in-question derived from or otherwise inspired by the trademark."

There are grey areas and then there is black and white. This is not a grey area....
