Compressing HD to a Web format

The very first time I cut HD i compressed it using Cineform .. which in my opinion was not needed.

Now I have clients screaming for new formats .. My suggestion was Mpeg4, Shows realy nice on 16:9 ...

I haven't tryed any WMV nor have I tryed using Canpus Pro to compress with .. any one having great success with a another format and/or Compression agent ?

What's the most highly used format for showing HD on Web ?

WMV and quicktime works well generally, if you're daring you might even give flash a try...

Vid, you mean footage that you shot with an hdv camera, right? I have been encoding mostly using Cleaner XL 1.5 for pc. You should have all the latest updates for your editing and encoding apps- I know that for example, you have to have the very latest version of Sorenson Squeeze to import Cineform AVI intermediate files like I use.

Make sure you de-interlace your video for web use if you film with an interlaced camera. For output, WMV and Quicktime are the most popular formats, Flash is more common lately also.

Actually right now It's HDV footage (sony) .. But I will have some HD Pana to do also ..

And Yes I've been going to Mpeg .. but would like to see if there is something more widely used

Divx format is by far the best thing you can use to do HD movies. It gives you the best quality file at the smallest size possible. If you use wmv you are bound to give up quality for size of vice versa. Wmv files are way too big. You can make an 18-20 min video at around 200MB with a great result in quality using divx. If you need help using the codec and getting the best results just hit me up. 305638991 on ICQ

Interesting .. I actually do convert to Divx for one of my clients for clip delivery .. smaller files, clear image, quicker to upload to a server.

However I never looked to see if it can handle an HDV ... It probably could handle a Mpeg covert to dvix ... What are you using to convert with ? Can virtual dub handle this ? I wonder
