Why do mods delete threads ?

without giving a reason ?

I wont press the issue by repeating the context , but everytime a thread gets deleted without an explanation theres always twice the amount of threads asking why ..

Is this an attempt to bring more attention to the subject ? because it seems to work that way..

not that i feel i "deserve" an explanation , but it would be nice to hear one anyways..

if you dont wanna respond via gfy feel free to contact me on icq.

Well,
1. Because they can.
2. Sometimes and advertiser or friend asks them to delete it. Doesn't make it right of course but depending on the situation. They don't want to lose advertising dollars or hurt a friends feelings. Something they need to realize in my opinion is that sometimes you have to look at the situation and see if the friend or the advertising dollars are worth it.

Always have to keep in mind that this "community" is actually still just a company... As much as sometimes it feels like it should be "ours" to speak freely on any subject the bottom line is.. well.. the bottomline and its controlled by a company whos interests are at stake.

spot on...

this is not a democracy...

Idunno....my statement above about money and morals apply in this industry everyday, but things like this hsould probably be deleted actually...the way that one was put anyway...yes there is question, but its is not deliberate intent by AFF...

moving on

The question wasn't whether or not they should or can. The question is WHY do they while knowing that it creates twice as much or more conversation about the topic that was just deleted. So if the purpose was not to remove the discussion, what might it be?

I agree with both points. About 2, they really need to take a closer look at what those advertisers are doing. In the case of AFF and DatingGold advertising on torrent sites, those sponsors keep putting money in the pockets of the people who rip off the very owners of this board, thus giving the thieves an incentive to continue their activities.

Nevermind that they rip off tons of others while at it, but I think it would be good business sense to take a stand against these practices. These people directly hollow out the profits of the tons of honest webmasters generating exposure for Playboy-owned sites. So in a way webmasters are to blame as well, as they keep promoting the sponsors that allow them to fuck them in the ass. Playboy is sadly becoming one of them, by allowing AFF and DatingGold to continue their practices AND flaunt themselves on GFY.

very good points there , i really dont get where adult.com/gfy/playboy gets $$$ , sure they get a bit of ad revenue , meanwhile MILLIONS of dollars of copyright material is being handed out by aff affiliates sites, and they arent even trying to hide it.. They cant even call their sites exclusive anymore as theres thousand of sites with the same rippeed content.

will76 05-23-2007 04:02 PM

Lets say I started a webmaster resource and I blocked sponsors like AFF and Sex search from my directory.

How would you guys feel about that ? Serious questions. Would you feel that I wouldn't be providing a complete service by blocking some sponsors from being listed there or do you think I would be doing the right thing by blocking them.

Personally as much as I would want to provide a complete resource I couldn't bring myself to helping to promote sites that do 10x more damage to this industry then any others. It would be a fine line to draw on who to blacklist or not blacklist, but I think a few of them really cross the line so in those cases it makes the decission a lot easier.

What would you do ? Would you block some sites and if so which ones? Do you think there would be a blacklash, as a resource site like you were abusing your powers (much like the mods do here) etc... It would be similar but from the other side of the spectrum.

Please discuss.

CDSmith 05-23-2007 04:24 PM

When they are spending $20K or more per year here on advertising and threaten to pull their account unless a certain thread is deleted, well it ain't hard to figure out what's going to happen.

The only way to counter that is if you yourself spend that much or more at GFY on advertising. :D

will76 --- plenty of people keep a blacklist. Having programs and other webmasters and their sites on blacklists is nothing new. I for one appreciate it when I see a TGP or linklist or resource etc taking a stand against certain companies and cheaters in general. It shows they have a modicum of sense and more than an ounce of business acumen.

$20K/year is a piss in the ocean compared to the amount of business sponsors lose thanks to these companies helping perpetuate a business model based on stealing.

If you're talking to me directly then you are preaching to the choir.

But if you owned this board trust me, no $20k account is a piss in the ocean. And in many cases it's not just $20K being considered, it's all the ongoing advertising revenue year after year, paid sticky threads, board skinnings, etc. One lone account could add up to over $100k revenue for the board's owner over time.

Someone already posted it.... it's all about $$$.

The problem is that it's most likely costing ICS/Playboy many times that, in loss of sales. I believe their primary business is selling content on a subscription-based model, be it print or electronic format, not running a fucking board.

Bake 05-23-2007 05:15 PM

Reasons for this are a product of this industry
How many webmasters last more than a few years?
Its allways about short term $

nonsense. the biggest determining factor is the poster. You'll find more threads being deleted that were started by assholes, trouble makers, etc.
The friend or advertising dollar is ALWAYS worth it. The poster and his drivel never are.

If posters don't like it, they can simply open their own board.

Oh I agree, There are many poster here that just live for trouble. Smokey is not one for the most part and did bring up a valid point. I'm not a drama queen either. I'll dabble in it a little but i'll never give any serious time to it unless it is directly effecting my bottom line. I am very loyal to my friends and this I know this board is here to make money and advertisers are an important part in that. But what do you do if one advertiser is fucking over all the other advertisers? Is it worth it to keep that one account when it might piss off all the others? I know i'm just a guest here and if they decided to ban me right now I wouldn't bitch and moan about it. I know i'm speaking out against one of the main advertisers here and that's my right, just like it is thier right to delete my threads and ban me.
