What do you do when a programmer bails on you?

So, we hired this guy...he takes 4 months on a 2 week job so far and it is still not done. he works full time in adult and for a pretty damn big company

I am at the end of my rope...I am pondering the thought of just throwing his name out there just cause I am so pissed, but this thread is more about WTF DO I DO?

I have NEVER had a programmer just bail like this, especially when we have already paid him half the money up front.

what do you all do when a programmer bails mid job and can't be reached?

Juicy D. Links 05-22-2007 07:09 PM

bring it on , name names!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

baddog 05-22-2007 07:11 PM

4 months is only 1 week in programmer years.

He is on schedule.

Mr Cheeks 05-22-2007 07:11 PM

i feel ya on this one brah. same happened to me this year with a couple of guys that i found on Craigslist. they just bailed, avoided my phone calls and emails. some crazy shit...

~Ray 05-22-2007 07:12 PM

sounds like you did everything right and he is in the wrong, so no need to protect him.

he may even appreciate the break in biz.

Sosa 05-22-2007 07:12 PM

hopefully he will see the thread and get the work done

tical 05-22-2007 07:12 PM

out him & find a new programmer

Tempest 05-22-2007 07:18 PM

Don't think you have many options other then shame him, or "fire" him and get some money back etc.... but I must say, your first mistake was hiring someone that already had a full time job. He doesn't need your money..

Pornwolf 05-22-2007 07:19 PM

I'm in the same boat on one project with one of my programmers. 4 months in and I'm just seeing progress. I could have learned to code the language the app s being coded in myself in that time.

WTF do they do play War Craft all fucking day?

I'm going to hire a staff that I can sit on instead of off site programmers shortly.

well, it was ideal because myself, he and his other partner were going to work on something together...but that is obviously now scrapped cause I don't work with flakes...not saying his partner is, but he sure as hell is

sucks too, cause the other thing was going to be a pretty cool project...but karma paid me a visit this weekend in the form of a better project, so it all worked out

tical 05-22-2007 07:33 PM

pay in 'phase' deposits, and always ask for source code so you can pass on to another programmer if necessary

After Shock Media 05-22-2007 07:37 PM

First you out him on GFY.
Then you track him down, rape his dog while he watches.
Then you proceed to duct tape him and eat a bag of dorritions or funjion and a coke or pepsi in front of him.
Lastly as you get ready to leave you trade his PC for a Mac.

Phoenix 05-22-2007 07:39 PM

send him love notes and flowers

well, I am pretty sure I have the source, which is why I am not TOO upset...but now I have to find someone to continue where he left off

tony286 05-22-2007 07:44 PM

rentacoder.com, you escrow the funds & don't have to release until the project is complete

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-22-2007 07:53 PM

well, because he doesn't have a "boss", but the big company he works full time with wasn't part of this deal, so there is no need involving them

Kill him?

Maybe not ...

Erk. Dunno.

I wonder if at elance, scriptlance et al., the programmers bidding are flaky too?

if the other guy was going to be a partner you can let him know its going nowhere and why. If someelse writes you a check bi weekly you got a boss lol

While escrow usually solves the money issue, it sure doesn't seem to help the delays which basically means you are losing money still. I have had several coders from there flake on me and not seem to care about ruining their rep. A couple others hit me with the "ok now that I've talked on messenger with you for two minutes and we trust each other, how about doing WU and cutting out RAC?" :Oh crap

thricer 05-22-2007 08:27 PM

wait for him

For some coders, that's for sure.

I have a client right now ... their tech guy is just blatantly making things up to cover his apparent incompetence, and it's reflecting back on me somewhat because it *looks* like we're falling behind .. the thing that pisses me off is it's like 5 minutes of work for this guy to give me what I need, but he doesn't do it .. then tells his BOSS he did it ... and then I fucking WATCH him do the work as I wait, making his previous story complete BULLSHIT! ... I want to choke him sometimes.

That's my rambling thought for the day. :1orglaugh
