Here was the deal ? last week, ?I Believe in Harvey Dent? images appeared on the internet, showing an image of actor Aaron Eckhart looking very?political. The reference, of course, the character in next year?s sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, in which Harvey Dent (who later becomes Two-Face in the Batman mythos) appears. The gimmick ? the ?campaign? was corrupted.
Reportedly from early on the website associated with the promo image, www.ibelieveinharveydenttoo.com was ?hacked,? with Dent?s image appearing more and more defaced as time went on. Finally (and as more and more visitors to the site added their e-mails) the image of a defaced election poster for Dent disappears entirely as visitors watch, replaced by the above, the first official look at Heath Ledger as the Joker from the coming movie.
Whether or not the marketing campaign will play into the film?s storyline, connecting the Joker with Dent (or perhaps revealing that the Joker is the cause of Dent?s transformation into Two-Face in the film?s storyline), remains to be seen.
The Dark Knight is due in theaters on July 18th, 2008.
