how often do you use a dictionary?

i've noticed in just about every hous ei enter, there's a dictionary on the bookshelf. but how often do you ACTUALLY use your dictionary? are you constantly hitting up the dictionary or dictionary.com to get a deeper meaning to what you're reading? is your vocabulary ever expanding? or are you satisfied making due with the context?

Aquarius 05-20-2007 01:35 PM

KILL_FRENZY 05-20-2007 01:39 PM

daily for me too :thumbsup

Deej 05-20-2007 01:43 PM

I only look up words when I need to make sure of their spelling.

Very rarely i find a word i dont know. I dont mean this in arrogance but I have a knack for words..a lot of them come from reading.

When i was in the 6th grade i was a smart yet rebellious youth. My mother was called into speak with my teacher and the lady actually said to my mother, "He has a higher vocabulary language than me and he uses it. Sometimes its intimidating."

this of course was after her saying what a noisy little fuck I was ...

obviously you can see I care not about my punctuation :winkwink:

grammar is for pussies, extravagant vocabularies are where it's at...

BVF 05-20-2007 01:47 PM

My vocabulary is extensive...Therefore, I don't need to use one often

Peaches 05-20-2007 01:49 PM

OMG, it's one of the reasons I want a good cell with net access - I swear I use Google every 5 minutes. I hate sitting in an airport reading a book w/o Google access :(

Bama 05-20-2007 01:51 PM

Not too often - but I have the Websters Dictionary plug-in for Firefox for those times when someone uses words with more than 7 letters in it :)

Wow I'll have to get that. Is there a thesaurus? I use a thesaurus when trying to create a good domain name.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 05-20-2007 01:59 PM

the thesaurus is a badass resource. i think a lot of my expanded vocabluary grew out of using the thesaurus while writing...

Peaches 05-20-2007 01:59 PM

I downloaded the new Firefox and it tells me I have a misspelled word in posts and gives me suggestions. What's the plug in, Bama?!!

BigBen 05-20-2007 02:15 PM

Google has a nifty little lookup tool that you can type into the search box...

define:someobscureword

Not sure when I last used a physical dictionary.

Bama 05-20-2007 02:19 PM

Kevin Marx 05-20-2007 02:26 PM

I like it as a decorative tool... one of those bigass ones on a pedestal or a lectern... makes it look very academic in our house.

CDSmith 05-20-2007 02:33 PM

I use the online webster's to check words for spelling and meaning, proper usage etc.

Maybe 3-5 or more times per week.

dynastoned 05-20-2007 02:36 PM

ya i use dictionary.com a lot for spelling and meaning of words im not sure about. thesaurus.com is cool for finding good domains.

D 05-20-2007 02:40 PM

www.dictionary.com - at least daily.
www.thesaurus.com - at least weekly.

jayeff 05-20-2007 02:45 PM

I haven't owned a dictionary since I was at school, which is not something of which I am proud. It is simply that if I had one, I wouldn't use it because I write quickly and don't like interrupting the flow.

I could probably get away with that if I were a faster and more accurate typist. Unfortunately too in the circumstances, I have the bad habit of rarely reading, let alone editing things I have written.

aico 05-20-2007 03:23 PM

Daily, but I use a widget not the book.

Gumballs 05-20-2007 03:28 PM

I uz won all da tyme. Y u azzkin?

porntertainment 05-20-2007 03:29 PM

I used to have three dictionaries. Nowadays I don't use an actual book, I just look it up on the internet (dictionary.com).

I don't use it every day, but I'll use it at least a few times on a weekly basis. I also use a thesaurus pretty often, too.

ayne468 05-20-2007 03:30 PM

I never use a dictionary....but use google spell check on my toolbar quite a lot:)

porntertainment 05-20-2007 03:36 PM

I forgot to mention I have bookmarks set up in Firefox so I can just type in "dict <word>" or "thes <word> in the address bar and it'll look up the word at dictionary.com or thesaurus.com.

baddog 05-20-2007 03:38 PM

This quote reminded me Of Jack, cept jack seemed pretty pristine with his punctuation and grammar as well as rhetorical vocabulary novels

Spunky 05-20-2007 05:37 PM

I probably use it a couple times a month.

TG Rebecca 05-20-2007 06:48 PM

i use dictionary.com maybe once or twice a month, when something just doesn't look right after i've started at it for five minutes. :)

dictionary.com, many times daily.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 05-21-2007 12:18 AM

i think i probably dictionary.com'd a good 40-50 words today, hah...

Sarah_Jayne 05-21-2007 01:58 AM

Not very often if I am honest. When I am online and I have a spelling question I tend to just stick a word into google and see if it corrects my spelling.

hdkiller 05-21-2007 02:01 AM

google define <WORD>

i use that for word lookup

geirlur 05-21-2007 02:49 AM
