Generally speaking why is non-english lanuague music so shit??

I was on my ipod and came across some german music rapping shit and it made me wonder, why dont french/german etc artists make good music like the english and americans generally speaking.

I have listened to french radio and on the commercial stations they all play english speaking music(generally speaking again). and the government controlled stations only play french speaking music because of regulations.

And you must agree with me. (generally speaking)

I know some of you will come up with examples but im talking about the majoirty.

So why dont the non-english speaking countries get some good tunes?

is it because of the langauge, well no, look at some exceptions celeen dion , enrqiue iglasias. They have made some non english tunes. they both speak foriegn langues in their tunes and some turn up hits.

Sorry this isnt a porn discussion but I am not a member of any music forums

just wondering.

JamesK2 05-17-2007 05:10 PM

Well I do agree that generally english music sounds better but c'mon you're giving a very bad example for non-english... german rap? :(

do you speak another language except english?

donkevlar 05-17-2007 05:31 PM

Probably because you don't understand what they're saying.

Plus you're listening to only bad music from other countries and comparing it to all of the music that is english because you know it better.

Some of my favorite music is non english.

Aquarius 05-17-2007 06:07 PM

There are a few good Mexican rappers.

Generally speaking... because you listen only crap music? :winkwink:

Now seriously, you're starting from a twisted logic, that the only music worth something is the one who takes an style from US and then reproduces it in its own language. First, it will sound odd to an ear that doesn't know that language. Second, you're ignoring all the music whose roots REALLY comes from that place. You even mention Celine Dion and Enrique Iglesias, who, in a scale of 1-10 in quality must rank around -8. If I take those standards for comparison purposes, yes, it all sucks. Now, I'd take Blink 182 and Hillary Duff and say "all English language music sucks" and I wouldn't be wrong :2 cents:

Ok cool, that may be so, But I dont understand the words to enqirue iglasias yet still love his tunes. They are spanish yet i like to chill and listen to his music. Same may be said of Celeen Dion and her french music. My mother loves her music.
I also dont understand the words to some of the black rappers in america yet still love their tunes. They speak to quickly often that you cant catch what they are saying.

also how come as my pervious statment says I listen to popular foreign radio stations and they play english/american music most of the time and the ones operated by the government actully have a law stating they have to play x hours of their own music.

How come big popular award shows give out prizes to english language music?

Hmm very good points. so your saying one of my problems may be that because i dont understand the langauge well, will infact taint my loving of the tune? and that may be a reason why i skip tunes earlier than I would say with an english song. maybe maybe.

Also you say that enrique and celine dion are -8? I disagree. Music is opinion and alot of people love them so generally speaking they are top artists. They sell loads.

Also a good english tune will make it in the top 10 in the french records. Which i have seen time and time before. Yet when a tune that is no.1 in france, it hardly ever makes it to number 1 in england.

The french dont understand our language yet they acknowledge a "good" tune.

But yes i partially agree with your points, espcially the first one about how i may disregard it early on, because it sounds odd and foreign to the ears, therefore I wont give it a chance.

No, just that i listened to a german rap song which sparked the thought in my mind. I could have been listening to a pop song and the same thought could have popped in my mind. Just that this was an incredibly poor song i was listening to.

Thurbs 05-17-2007 06:53 PM

dude ....

I listen to some of the craziest dutch music with Nickbaauw in the car sometimes, like folk music, its the shit. And that three more beers song in dutch is awesome.

Then there is that sailboat named anna song in German, the shizznat.

Ok im off to bed now, but I would quite like to hear some songs that foriengers say are good. Please post the names of amazingly good songs in your opinion and I will listen to them tomorrow and see whether or not I have just been listening to the wrong tunes. Songs that have made it to top 10 in the charts, not songs that you think are good ( as we probably have different tastes)

And I will take back my statment in the title. (edit - if i like them hehe)

Thurbs 05-17-2007 06:57 PM

im not a foreigner lol .. Im California raised, just appreciate other music

I like Ramstein, and have no clue what the fuck they are saying. Maybe you just heard some bad music, lol.

v4 media 05-18-2007 12:09 AM

Brazilian music is great.

I live in Spain, some Spanish music is good, although Spanish rap is shite because of sentence stucture, you can't play about with it like you can in English.

I agree with you about French music, mosty crap, alot of it is too deep n wordy, but the French love Phill Collins so that explains alot.. hehe.

KILL_FRENZY 05-18-2007 12:22 AM

It's applcable ony for rap music. The germans for example are making some great fucking electronic music:thumbsup

it depends on the culture or where the listener came from... if to you it sounds shit, well to other people, it's not... just my 2 cents... ;)

Antonio 05-18-2007 01:14 AM

you should listen to Vatican hip-hop rather than German rap, now THAT music OWNS (generally speaking)

yet again (generally speaking) there're million of GREAT songs in all sorts of languages that you'll never hear but you'll hear millions of CRAPPY US songs on just about every chart. Why? Coz its all about the benjamins (sp)

and generally spaking the musicians in the US and the UK will get paid more $$ that anywhere else -> which leads to fierce competition -> leads to (generally speaking) great songs

on the other hand I'll never understand the motive behind poisoning the radio and tv stations with the trashy rap "songs". There's PLENTY of GREAT black music, why do they have to play such RUBBISH????? I don't think people actually WANT to listen to such crap, I firmly believe this is what they call push-demand (just like the Diesel jeans for example - crappy product beaten in the head of the consumer with endless commercials, buzz, and fuck knows what else)

Lee 05-18-2007 01:31 AM

Its a rather sweeping statement but then again I would come up with a sweeping statement of my own in that opera sounds fucking atrocious sung in English.

A couple of groups that spring to mind, for metal Rammstein are great, for pop check out Niagara from France (not sure if she is still around but when MTV used to be good they played a couple of good songs).

Jace 05-18-2007 01:35 AM

I will never get why mexican music hasn't progressed in the past 50 years

i wonder if the mexicans even know there are more instruments out now than the guitar and accordian?

That's a great band. If they sang in English they would be incredibly huge instead of just Euro huge.

Violetta 05-18-2007 04:00 AM

Angelo22 05-18-2007 06:13 AM

I agree with daksoul

And apart other things... you can't expact many non-english sogns to be promoted in english speaking countries.
And plus, youre probably talking about mainstream, commercial music (contemporary, of course), of which 90% sucks either way, may it be in english, spanish, turkish, or any other language

quicksand 05-18-2007 06:17 AM

Music is an universal lenguage...:2 cents:
You're talking about "pop music".
There're a lot of reasons why most "pop music" is mostly in english. The US market is the biggest one, english is the most spoken language in the world and every pop artist that wants to get international success is gonna sing in english. Plus, english is a great language for pop (or rock, or rap, etc) music because of its structure.
A guy like Enrique Iglesias started singing in Spanish and switched to English to try to get into the US market. Once he got there, there's no reason to get back to Spanish, as the US is market is a lot more profitable for him.

But, as you say, "Music is opinion and alot of people love them so generally speaking they are top artists. They sell loads." In your opinion, they're good. Selling a lot doesn't make you a great musician... in fact, most of the "top artists" don't even write their songs. I'm sure you can name some big stars from a few years ago that sold a lot of cds and today everybody thinks they're just pure crap :)
And speaking from that perspective (that of the "pop artists") there're lots of great "pop artists" out there singing in many different languages and selling lots of cds (and some of them even making good music!:winkwink: ). You just don't know them :)

The truth is, music is more than opinion, is a form of art, you can like it or not, but the "quality" of music is somehow measurable. Sadly, that doesn't apply to most "pop artists" today, they're just a marketing product in most cases with no sustance behind the looks.

This is, of course, just my opinion! :)

directfiesta 05-18-2007 06:21 AM

Klen 05-18-2007 06:49 AM

Rapers from Croatia are very good, some of them works as producers for american rappers.

TBrown 05-18-2007 06:58 AM

I have to agree...

jayeff 05-18-2007 07:02 AM

Your own cultural perspective is the main reason. Nothing creative is bound by absolute standards set in stone, common to all people. Music which jars your perception will be entirely familiar and enjoyable to someone else. If you were running a non-US record company, you would likely hope that one of your artists will get an international break, but you are not usually going to record people who simply put out US-style music in their own language (not even when that language is english).

You are also overlooking the reality that even were you to confine comparison to english-language sources, a heck of a lot of music stays on one side of the Atlantic or the other, never successfully making the crossing. Same reason.

Hiphop is out there , but country music for example will never be popular anywhere else outside the US

Thats a nice sum up, apart from you say english is the most spoken language in the world which is an error. I would however agree the language with the most radios is probably english.

Good reasoning I understand that. So your saying that generally speaking there are tonnes out there like me, because I like the most popular music in the world? I feel so common haha And thats its not the music is shit, its just me and millions like me cant appreciate it properly.

I have to agree partly on this comment, Rap is ok but not a way to compare music at all. Rap is Rap, it's not music just rhythm rhyming words.

But there are many great songs that are not english, I can think of many latin, Italian, French, German, Scandinavian, etc.......

That is what makes the world interesting diversity.
