Is it Pickle or Monkey in the Middle?

We are REALLY busy here today at YappoDollars and we are arguing as to whether the old school game of two people throwing a ball and keeping it from the middle person is called Pickle in the Middle or Monkey in the Middle?

mattz 05-16-2007 12:25 PM

Monkey in the middle, lol I've never heard of pickle in the middle haha

Karupted Charles 05-16-2007 12:26 PM

The only pickle in the middle is during Girl Girl Guy shoots. It's a monkey

heymatty 05-16-2007 12:28 PM

In England it is referred to as piggy in the middle. I think piggy may of become pickle via some form of chinese whispers across the atlantic.

StuartD 05-16-2007 12:28 PM

pickle in the middle?!?!?!

Someone on this planet has actually said this out loud before?

Sly 05-16-2007 02:01 PM

Definitely pickle.

SykkBoy 05-16-2007 02:05 PM

We always just called it Keep Away...but then I guess I'm older than a lot of your guys...

so weird.. in vancouver, it's referred to as "piggy in the middle". Everyone from back east refers to it as 'monkey in the middle'.. so on

This is the first reference to England about it though :1orglaugh

Michaelious 05-16-2007 02:09 PM

In the uk we call it piggy in th middle.

rotowa85 05-16-2007 02:39 PM

Piggy in the middle in the UK, monkey in the middle doesnt sound right to me, and pickle in the middle just sounds like a deviant sex game

tranza 05-16-2007 02:54 PM

Never heard about that game....

D 05-16-2007 02:55 PM

The game is called Monkey in the middle.

I bet I know what caused the guy to think "pickle," though...

A "pickle" is a baseball term referring to the time when a runner is trapped between bases (e.g. if a runner was half-way from first to second, and the second- basemen was thrown the ball, and the runner stopped, and ran back toward first, and the second basemen then threw the ball to first causing the runner to stop, and run back to second, etc. etc... until the runner was tagged out, or made it safely to a base, he'd be "in a pickle"),

You see pickles pretty regularly in Little League games.

It was used in baseball as well ... but as I grew up it was always "pickle." So we are located in Tucson, but myself and another co-worker are from Buffalo. We are the only two in the office saying pickle, everyone else says Monkey. So we started calling people all over the nation, looks like it's a Western New York thing.

Sly 05-16-2007 03:04 PM

Well I'm from Iowa and everyone called it pickle. Y'all should list your raising grounds.

Yes, I said y'all.
