Do you believe in God?

According to this week's (European) Newsweek, nine out of every ten Americans call themselves "believers".

Does this also apply to GFYers? Or is being a pornographer and a believer incompatible?

Discuss...

Everyone believes in god.

biskoppen 05-16-2007 09:03 AM

Believing that reality we know just came out of nowhere seems odd to me...

Not in the monotheistic creator sense
but I believe in things like forces of nature, mother earth and such

I consder myself spiritual, but not religious

If that's a belief in "God" than yes, but I don't in the sense that most believe in God. For me, it's not about an old man in sandals with a long beard and some puppet master in the sky

D 05-16-2007 09:12 AM

I believe in "god" as a force that has affected the evolution of our species, and "god" as an embodiment of karma.

Are these "gods" the same entity? No clue.

Do I believe that that "the power of prayer" exists? Sure - but probably for different reasons than most of the people praying do.

Do I believe there's some all-knowing being up there hearing everyone's thoughts that took a rib out of a guy a long time ago to create him a mate? Not at all... aside from in the symbolic sense.

So do I believe in God? Depends on how liberal your definition is.

pornguy 05-16-2007 09:13 AM

No. I dont.

madawgz 05-16-2007 09:15 AM

i believe there might be a force out there that we dont know

but i dont believe in jesus or any of those people, i find that all bullshit

TeenSluts 05-16-2007 09:16 AM

sometimes :( :)

StuartD 05-16-2007 09:22 AM

I believe in faith.

Faith has given people the power to do way more than God ever has.

thricer 05-16-2007 09:23 AM

nah.. I don't

stev0 05-16-2007 09:23 AM

Belief in non-existent entities gets some people committed, yet 9 of 10 American's say they believe in one without any proof or logical reasoning. Maybe it's just trendy?

It really amazes me.

Science has disproved many aspects of religion again and again, although some would argue that religion is a science (as the catholic/christian schools preach) and explain things in a different way (ie, creationism vs evolution). That's complete bullshit in my opinion, but if people want to base their knowledge of the world on an old novel thats their problem.

My science cured smallpox while theirs has a history of burning witches and starting wars. Go figure.

I believe in God but i do not believe humans have the capacity to explain "it", i think we will die and the answer to life as we know will be something we ever thought possible.

Mr Steele 05-16-2007 09:31 AM

I don't believe in Jerry Falwell's God..but I believe in something

yahoo-xxx-girls.com 05-16-2007 09:33 AM

I believe in god like creatures, however not in humanities exploitation of such for the purpose of controlling the rest of the population for personal gain or for political reasons. Our history has many examples of this...

I'm sure if there are gods, or even a single god; "it" or "they" would most likely look at our reasons for doing things with almost no thought or interest ...

CaptainHowdy 05-16-2007 09:38 AM

I believe in God when it's convenient... like most men.

mattz 05-16-2007 09:40 AM

I'm spiritual but not religous

Drake 05-16-2007 09:43 AM

I don't think it's incompatible. Many people believe in some higher power but no formal religion.

Many early scientists undertook the study of sciences and nature in order to better understand the world - they believed Earth was God's creation for man to unlock. Science was and is still often is guided by beliefs as well as politics.

But I believe that if God exists, "He" is not what's found in any Bible or scripture. It's just some undefinable force that appears to have always existed or allowed things to exist and spans the entire universe, and beyond, if there is a beyond.

BT 05-16-2007 09:44 AM

I trust in my higher power

BBWTori 05-16-2007 09:45 AM

God is GREAT!

LiveDose 05-16-2007 09:45 AM

I believe in something but not organized religion.

It's kind of the same as do you believe in love? You can't prove it, but someone else can say Yeah I feel that way too! and such. We call it love, whatever it is.

So given the same method of indirect proof, I'd say yeah I believe in "god" as a force out there. Clearly it affects nearly everyone on the planet in some way, can't deny that part.

I dont practice any particular religion though, and I dont belong to organizations built around a particular strain of belief (ie: a church).

ztik 05-16-2007 09:54 AM

Obviously there is some crazy shit going on somewhere. There is more than likely, some greater (larger) things then just stars and planets.

But some magic guy in the sky watching over earth, no way. That i just retarded. Its an outdated way to scam people out of money while controlling the population.

Fap 05-16-2007 09:55 AM

I dont know what i believe.. i'd like to believe but it's hard to belive something created the world, i need proof (biology major here)

Yeah... I think Sting said it best... "Men go crazy in congregations, but they only get better one by one."

You mean you can measure the effects of love. Thats indirect proof. You're still taking (on faith) the subjects word that they are "in love".

Wire up someone cooking dinner versus them in prayer and I'd bet good money you could also measure differences. Isn't prayer supposed to be similar to expressing love for your god?

sacX 05-16-2007 10:01 AM

No, although I'm willing to change my mind when any credible evidence turns up.

Angelo22 05-16-2007 10:03 AM

I do... though my conception of "God" would certainly be offensive to any of the religions out there

That's just an indirect way of measuring "love". They've also measured bodily reactions for fear and excitement. The same stimuli can have the same physiological affects in two different people but one person's mind interprets it as fun and exciting while another interprets it as terrifying and scary. The only way we know how the subject has interpreted the stimuli is by asking them.

TG Rebecca 05-16-2007 10:06 AM

yes. (stupid 8 character rule)

ADL Colin 05-16-2007 11:44 AM

I don't believe in a god nor gods. I don't believe in a higher power. I don't believe in an energy, a force or whatever other physics term one might use as a substitute for "God".

Does an imaginary being in the sky that loves you, yet will send you to hell to be tortured and in misery for eternity seem odd? It does to me. I'm not sure where we came from or where we're gonna go, if anywhere. I can say that In my sense of reality, I'm here right now, experiencing this moment as I type this. Thats all I feel I know for sure, and I haven't really decided yet if I even 'know' that, because the moment is fluid. By the time you become aware of the moment, it's gone to another moment and you can't try to get ahead of the moment to catch it, because it will never have happened yet. What I'm saying is, it takes 'time' for our brain to retrieve the information picked up by our senses, which means, we can never BE in the moment, so we can never REALLY KNOW what is real. But anyways, no I don't think I believe in a 'God', I think I do believe in an infinate energy source, but even that had to come from somewhere.... and NO, you can't have any of what I'm on...lol.

AtlantisCash 05-16-2007 01:23 PM

Before that it was Clapton.
Before that he was dead.
