Seagate hard drives . . . do you like them or not?

I'm thinking about getting a Seagate internal and hook it up with an external enclosure that has Firewire 400 for my iMac and USB 2.0 for my PC laptop.

So far, no one I have asked has had anything negative to say about Seagate drives, either internal or external. Before I go ahead with the purchase, I want to see if anyone here has had a problem with Seagate.

What's your opinion?

I would suggest Western Digital.

Seagates externals are great. The 400-500gb models are pretty strudy and stable.

We've purchased more than 60 drives over the last 5 years.

I have a theory that all the drive manufacturers get together once a year and decide who is going to have a bad run that year, because every single brand we've purchased has had multiple failures except for Samsung (no failures at all) and Seagate (only one failure.) But, to be fair, we've only had a couple of Samsung drives, not enough to really draw a conclusion.

Western Digitals are generally considered to be pieces of crap by many industry people; they have had more failures for us than any other single brand (probably at least 6 or 7 failures), but Maxtor is a close second (3 or 4 failures.)

Hitachi drives have been pretty reliable, though they sucked when their storage division was owned by IBM.

Seagate, next to Samsung, are the most reliable drives we have ever had. They do come with a 5 year warranty while all the others are generally 1 or at the most 3 years, and I think that says something.

my brother buys only seagate harddiscs, they have longer warranty here and they are more quiet than WD and their temperature is much lower compared to other

Gaybucks thanks for a detailed, thoughtful reply. I appreciate it!:thumbsup You're right--that 5 year warranty is worth something. Just won't replace lost data, but if it's free replacement that's better than the 1 yr drives. Thanks again.
