Microphone recommenddations for FX1?
Just picked up an HDR-FX1, what is a good shotgun or other microphone for it in the $100-$200 range or am I better off using the FX1 mic than what I can get in that budget range?

dont use the internal mic, its absolute pure shit.
I can't remember if the FX1 ships with a detachable mic, but if it does, thats ok for sound. The question is : What are you going to be doing with your cam? If its gonzo type shooting with no voice coming from behind the camera, get yourself a hyper cardoid boom mic and attach it to the front. Or splurge on a Boom pole and have someone get sound from above for you. If you're going to be hearing voices from everywhere, just keep the el-cheapo omni directional Rhode mic they supplied you. But don't use the internal mic unless you like your stuff sounding like it was recorded inside a tin can. |
I need something that will pic up both my voice (while holding the camera) and the models voice. There will be a lot of talking. Looking to spend $200-$500

One decent solution is this is the little Sony ECM-MSD1 High Grade Stereo Microphone from sony. It definitely cleans up all that snap crackle pop but you still have to be a bit gentle with the cam. It's directional but keep it on 120degrees or it will cut off when you shoot at angles. It's only $100 but it's quite an improvement from the internal one. Also, I highly recommend an on camera light source too. I've used the Sony HVL-20DMA 10 Watt & 20 Watt Dual Video Light and it makes a huge difference. Comes with a bracket so you can use it together with the mic but I just mount it to the shoe and wedge the mic with the wind gaurd on between the wide angle lens and the bottom of the shitty internal mic. :winkwink: Sony Accessories |
I doubt a $100 camera will do the trick. Still looking for recommendations

The FX-1 internal mic is crappy, unlike the stock stereo mic on the Sony VX2100, which is actually pretty decent. There are much better external mics out there now, but for a budget-priced external mic, you can try a Sennheiser MKE 300. It's mono, like many external mics, so you will have to to fill the other audio channel in post to create a pseudo-stereo effect. And it is very directional, so if you intend to speak from behind the camera you have to speak loudly to compensate for that.

Sennheiser MKE300
best MIC for the FX1 for the price. |
Yep, the OEM mic is total crap. I have the Azden SMX-10 with a custom mount (just like the Z1). This frees up my shoe for my light... otherwise you have to choose if you want to use your light or your mic.
