Why Are 70% of Criminal Defense Lawyers Former DAs and Cops?

Is there a good reason for this? And also, is it a good thing to have someone like that defend you or it's better to go with a lawyer who's never worked for "the other side"?

Wizzo 05-14-2007 05:54 AM

Where did you get that number?

eurabia 05-14-2007 06:05 AM

Just a guess. Maybe it's 50%. But it's significantly high in any case.

oh my god you are an idiot, you come along and make a statement without anything to back it up other than its what i think

Wizzo 05-14-2007 06:45 AM

How about not putting yourself in the position of needing a criminal defense lawyer...

Peaches 05-14-2007 08:30 AM

I've never heard that percentage ever, but criminal defense lawyers make a lot more $$$ (unless you're a Public Defender) than a DA or police, so it stands to reason if you have the drive and didn't mind defending people that might very well be guilty, you'd follow the $$$.

TurboAngel 05-14-2007 08:32 AM

I don't think that's true.

:)

DjSap 05-14-2007 08:38 AM

I think you mean prosecutors. There aren't that many DA's to begin with. Basically prosecutors usually are people who weren't good enough in law school to be recruited by criminal defense firms. Thus they opt to go for the second path which is to be a prosecutor for a few years and then switch over to private practice once you have some valuable skills to bring to a CD firm.

Not sure where you got the cops thing from, while there are cops who become CD lawyers the number of former prosecutors is waaay higher.

pornguy 05-14-2007 08:39 AM

That % is way the hello over. I would say closer to MAYBE 1.5%

eurabia 05-14-2007 09:21 AM

o shut up. this is not scientific research paper. this is a thread on fucking gfy.

Sure, prosecutors. So basically, you're saying former prosecutors are 2d rate lawyers, so the quality of defense would not be the best.

You are a fucking idiot. I should come down to wear you are and smack your head with my cock. hopefully it will smack some sense into you.

I love how you just pull a random percentage off the top of your head then say "o well maybe not just 50%" which is another random percentage.

Get facts dont just make shit up, why are so many people complete retards?

really you should never talk again, i got a buddy like you, just sperts out random "facts" which are not even facts to back up his bullshit arguments.

seeric 05-14-2007 09:44 AM

the majority do it for more money.

l.e. and prosecutors don't make shit.

No, what I am saying is that they were 2nd rate law students. The best law students get picked up by CD firms straight out of law school, the people who don't have to go into prosecution. However it doesn't make one group better than the other as the only thing separating them is usually their law school gpa.

Actually Pete..it's more like 75% due to a 33% population increase in the past 4.5 years within the age range of 28-36.

Most defense attorneys are former public defenders or prosecutors, not cops unless the cop leaves LE and goes to law school.

Very few of the top % of any graduating law class go and work for the government. Those that do want to do criminal work nearly always work as a Public Defender or prosecutor. You are wrong about the top students going into private practice first. The reason why most lawyers work for the state instead of private practice is that you get to do actual trial work and not sit in the law library shepherdizing and pulling case law. Private firms will not stick novice attorneys into court. Their paying clients would crap big bricks and go hire another firm if their day in court was Rookie Trial Litigation 101.

Oh man . . . .

eurabia 05-14-2007 02:33 PM

OK... So do you guys think that having someone who's worked as a prosecutor is an advantage because he knows the system and has connections or whatever?

ModelPerfect 05-14-2007 03:49 PM

Because they're tired of working so hard for very little money just to see criminals walk, so why not get paid well for the same result?

What he said. Scoreman knows his shit.

A surprisingly high % of law school grads don't actually practice law however. They use the law degree as a stepping stone to other things.
