Computer nerds...err...experts - inside please

Im gonna buy a new system one of these days and have roughly found what i want.
I used an online tool to configure a system. I dont know much abour brands and stuff though. Is there anything you would change? Is there anything that doesnt work together?

Im thinking about using a small 10.000 rpm harddrive for the operating system. This makes sense right?

Evil E 05-13-2007 10:18 AM

Windows XP instead of Windows Vista.

Might want to add a second hard drive with raid 1 to have data redundancy.

ssp 05-13-2007 10:30 AM

Why not get a mainboard with sound and lan, wireless and firewire onboard?

HEAT 05-13-2007 10:48 AM

Deej 05-13-2007 10:50 AM

Yeah, I was just going to say that.

Why get such a shitty motherboard when you have such nice componets?

Martin3 05-13-2007 10:59 AM

I'd go with better ram and a 550 watt psu.

Dirty F 05-13-2007 11:05 AM

Noted. Thanks.

I can add 2 videocards in it right? I might buy a 2nd card in the future.

Dirty F 05-13-2007 11:06 AM

Well, I'd go with a different board aswell. The 590 suggested above is a good one. 570 also, but about $30-40US cheaper, both will have all your usb, firewire, sound, and lan onboard. OCZ ram instead of Kingston.
550 watt psu is about the minimum I'd go with. It depends on how many fans and hard drives you plan on adding. Having room for future growth doesn't hurt. I don't know how power hungry that card and cpu are. I have a 550 with an opteron 165 [email protected], x1900xt, 3 hard drives, and 4 120mm fans + 80mm cpu fan. It works fine for me. But the opteron isn't very power hungry. 650 watt are higher probably wouldn't hurt, price difference isn't that much once you get that high anyways.

acctman 05-13-2007 11:44 AM

buy a shuttle xpc box... www.shuttle.com

edit: western digital drives SUCK... they die after about 3-5yrs, right when the warranty runs out.. get a seagate

Antonio 05-13-2007 01:38 PM

second video card? do you really need the one that you chose on a frist place? do you do video editing? play games? otherwise drop it, way too much money IMO

yet again if you really want Vista you migh need it, lol

cess 05-13-2007 03:50 PM

You should be reading/asking at anandtech or some other tech site/forum. BTW why go with AMD? Intel is a much better buy right now...

I hear exactly the same stories the other way around.

Well, not for now. That 768 card is more than enough but who knows next year?

GAMEFINEST 05-13-2007 04:04 PM

Wuts wrong with AMD?

whomework 05-13-2007 05:06 PM

I would ditch the floppy drive and get yourself a 1GB thumb drive for about the same price. Also, get yourself an extarnal HDD for backups. Nothing like losing all your data and not having a backup strategy in place. I have seen grown men cry over lost data. LOL.

tranza 05-13-2007 05:34 PM

Seems like you're going to build a nice CPU there...

I stopped using floppy drives, I use USB sticks instead.. 2GB... 4GBs. Why go back to 1.4MB drives lol!

I think any ASUS board with shit on board will do the trick.. I usually go for a deluxe or premium board so I know it's good. Check out their website www.asus.com.tw I think.

Personlly I found Vista to be a horrid system but that's up to you.

The Sultan Of Smut 05-15-2007 03:45 AM

The only thing I could add is maybe toss the ASUS board. I know ASUS boards are packed but I've owned two in the past and my Internet connection would drop periodically. I know it was the board both times since in each instance I swapped it out but used the same components.

It's been a while now so maybe their boards in the past few years don't do that but I'll never buy one again.
