Last weekend, I was shooting a new model. From the sample pics she sent, and our talk, I wasn't really sure how well she would do in front of the camera. Still, a 19 year old real goth, total first-time amateur, I had to give it a shot. Good thing I did, she's amazing...

Sly, you mention that we have different views on what is goth... That comes from me spending the last six years as part of the gothic subculture, and the take on it all that grew out of that. Goth is much broader than most people, even most self-proclaimed "goths", like to admit.

There are all sorts of people who fit into the goth community, and have a look that is somewhat goth. I don't want to say you have to have black and purple hair, or a sisters of mercy t-shirt, to be goth. That has extended to my photography... It is goth if it is dark or morbid, if it is creative and unique, as long as there is a conceptual connection. Maybe I shouldn't market my stuff as "goth", but it's as good a label as any.

Shadow Jen is definitely one of the most real goths I have shot. This set is pretty "light", but that is what we were going for. Even before shooting, she was dressed much more gothy than some of the shoots I do. She came to my shoot a day after getting back from a goth music festival in germany... you get the idea.

Anyhow, when I have pics from some of the other sets, I will share them. For now, this set is all I have had time to prep... Here are the remaining samples from this set.

At this point, she is an amateur, modelling for fun, doing very softcore stuff. She isn't interested in more modelling, as far as I can tell. I am planning to offer not to even license her pics. Normally I wouldn't make an offer like that, even in exchange for her exclusively working with me, but she's a great girl and I am happy to do it to keep her happy with working with us.

they aren't hardcore goth, but most definately identifiable as goth - a sort of lite romantic version but still fucking neato.
of course you can tell a goth when they're naked.. look for the body that hasn't seen sunlight since it was 16.
i've been going on for ages about how i want to shoot some of the abundant goths in brisbane.. must get off my ass to do that...

btw GW, i like that set of yours of the girl with the fan and the white netted slip with the tassels.. she was too pale for most of the guys here.. but that and the tease was awesome.. weird how softcore can be more arousing.. well.. in the beginning, you still want to end up seeing pink..

I have to admit, what I call "goth" in my content is more a matter of "Ian likes it" than any other definition. Also, not all of my shoots are particularly goth, as I like to try different things. Still, I think there is a conceptual continuity to what I do. I know that plenty of real goths like our sites, as do mainstream people fascinated by goth stuff.

As for the softcore aspect... I think the tease is great. If you keep showing more and more, you never win... Look at all the extreme hardcore shit out there. I can't compete with that, and I don't want to. So I show sexy photos of beautiful girls. Sometimes there is pink, sometimes not.

I do what the models are comfortable with, and in return I get some amazing models who don't work with anyone else, or at least not many photographers. Works for me, I don't want to be "that scummy photographer guy".

And yeah, you can tell a goth when she's naked. If you think its only about clothes, you're missing something. There is a style, there is an attitude, there is a community, and there is a lot more. Not all of it disappears when the girl is naked... Shadow Jen is as gothy naked as she is clothed, the same with Undine.

We don't get chargebacks. They are very rare for us. We have a lot of satisfied members, who retain very well. I am not really worried that people are disappointed with the softcore nature of our sites. Some of the girls show pink, some do hardcore (solo)... and most don't. So far, no complaints from members.

Then all is well.

GW's sites have the most loyal subscribers of anyone I know, he about beats the hell out of Nina Knows Best in that respect. Is he spamming right now? Hell if I could take pics as good as he does I would be plastering them all over the place.

As for chargebacks GW does not promise hardcore. It is an occasional bonus to his members, and that keeps the chargebacks down.

Heh. Thanks for your concern, though. :) I don't want to start disappointing people... Most people who see how I post around here will guess that I don't like misleading advertising. I will definitely keep in mind the fact that our content is pretty softcore, as I go forward, so the sites accurately sell what we do.

For the most part, the market we are positioned in is happy with softcore... As we get more and more traffic from affiliates, we will need to be more clear.

Oh, and MrThumbs... Don't try too hard, okay? I don't like you, and I know you don't like me, but seriously, you pick on some pretty small details in your quest to try to zing me. "Us" is me and Vail, who run our sites, or Pleiades Web Press, the company that owns them. "I" is me, Ian X. Sometimes I sign my posts, when I am writing more with the tone of a letter. Usually, for bullshit, I don't.

The only reason a softcore site would have problems with chargebacks is if the tour advertises or implies that there is hardcore pussy inside, and join to discover there is none.

In my experience member retention is higher with softcore and chargebacks are low. Of course if you don't promote it right then you will screw up and lose money.

..and you're right, you don't need to fit the "mold" to be "goth," from what I've seen, heard, read, it is a conceptual thing, it is an outlook and a perspective moreso than just a style.

I work with some other goth sites. Some of my best friends run goth sites... http://www.sexraven.com and http://www.darkplay.net are good examples. I am in a coalition that includes a number of prestegious goth sites, and is still growing. I also work with some of the bigger sites, such as trading galleries with Gothic Sluts and Barely Evil.
