state controlling gas prices??? interesting article
|
Many states (and provinces in Canada) have rules about gas pricing. It isn't there for the reason they are using to enforce it in that case, but to stop big companies from pushing independants out of business by under pricing gas.
For a while here in Quebec, the big companies were trying to get rid of some of the smaller ones. It got to the point where the big company's retail price to the consumers was lower than what they were bulk selling it to the independant chains. The government stepped in, and now there is a "base" retail price set every week. Socialism is the answer, apparently. |
Yeah it's a nice legal scam isn't it? Personally, I wouldnt care if the oil companies all keep their insane profits, BUT are required to invest in alternative fuel R&D. Not more R&D that is simply mapping likely oil sources.

What's really fucked up, is the set price is based on speculation and not actual prices... :pimp

thats the problem. Here in NYC, gas is more this time of year than it was last year even though the price per barrel is less now than last year.... AND i dont see any decrease in traffic here in New York City or on Long Island...seems to be worse than ever |
they should take a look at canada's "state fixed" price model.
It hasnt worked here i dont see why it would work there :) In canada some of the provinces have it , some dont.. doesn't seem to make a difference , provinces with controlled pricing aren't any higher or lower than provinces without. |
Notwithstanding that article, of course they control gas prices. 70% of the price of gas has been taxes for a long time. Personally, I hope they raise gas to $10/gallon. Only then will we get serious about developing alternative energy sources that work (fuel cells). Plus, it'll get all the unnecessary fukkers off the road. Of course, that make the price of everything sky rocket in the interim - but I'm prepared. I have multiple income streams and file bankruptcies by day!

No real surprise there. No one ever wondered why gas prices go up in the summer and on long weekends?
