Australian University Stabbing - USA thoughts wanted

Today there was a stabbing at an Australian university. It is said that the stabber was trying to repeat the Virginia Tech killings... with a knife.

"A female science student was wearing a home-made balaclava and leather gloves when she attacked another female student with a steak knife at La Trobe University in Melbourne's north this morning."
http://www.theage.com.au/news/nation...390275877.html

Here are my questions:
1. This girl openly said she wanted to kill a lot of people like in the Vigiia Tech killing. Guns are hard to get ahold of in Australia due to gun control laws. What kind of weapon would she have likely used if she was in the USA? Would this have increased the number of people injured or killed?

2. It is presently illegal to carry a concealed knife in Australia. Is this stabbing evidence that knives should abe allowed everywhere to prevent this kind of thing from happening again? (cos if ALL the students had knives this could have been stopped quicker and nobody would have been hurt!)

"Police sources have told theage.com.au that the 23-year-old Bundoora woman stabbed a behavioural science student she did not know in a toilet block inside the Bundoora campus library about 11am."

Guess who just got her doctoral thesis handed to her on a silver platter.

Certainly that could be very true. But still, you'd be shocked at how many guns are on the streets of Sydney, etc in the hands of criminals. For someone like a Uni student she wouldn't have any idea where to start. But if you even know one shady fellow, you can get a gun in about 15 minutes in Sydney lol.

Getting a gun anywhere is easy if you know a few shady people. But certainly harder to get for normal people than in the US where its very easy.

Having to dig and work to get a gun is usually enough incentive to not get one for most people.

I live in melbourne and i would have no idea where to get a gun without getting the shooters licence. Maybe i just dont move in those circles!

What is with you people from other countries that are so outspoken against American gun laws? You don't even live here. If Americans truly had a problem with guns then we'd ban them!

Unless you live in a low income area, you will probably go your entire life without hearing a gunshot in your neighborhood. And given what goes on in the FEW areas where gun violence is a problem, they'd just be stabbing each other to death anyway.

Right, but really what I meant by my post was that guns actually seem to be becoming more prolific amongst those who run in those circles. But right, for the average crazy it is a deterrent.

She would've used an automatic assault rifle and it would result in many dead.

Yes, banning weapons only takes weapons from the good guys. The criminals will still get a hold of what they need to kill or maim.

Gun Control

You control your gun, I'll control mine.

If someone really wanted to kill a bunch of people with an everyday object, they could simply get into a car & run down a group of tourists etc.

Next foreigner to get on here & offer their personal take on VA TECH is getting a boot in their socialist ass.

:winkwink: The problem with that is there is no such thing as gun control - any ass can have one - and they are out of control. The more arms in circulation - the more out of control people will be. They are called "the public" and the public can be mentally retarded at some time in their lives.

In the other few "media shootings" recently, noticed LE comments along the lines of - "..if the weapon was not accessible, there would have been far less damage". Bang went another.... think 7 killings.

Well... it's not exactly a custom in many countries to run down a group of tourists using a car :)

give them a rock, or teach them to make a fist, and they are just as dangerous.

why fiddle fuck around with a knife or a gun?
use a bomb take out a whole bunch at one time.
cheaper and easier to make.
most home kitchens have all that is needed.

It seems like you're implying that "if she had a gun, a lot more people would be dead". This much is true.

However, you're actually making a statement FOR guns. You said "It is presently illegal to carry a concealed knife in Australia". As we "gun nuts" always say: "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". In your case, the knife was outlawed and yet this psycho bitch DID conceal one illegally. So here you are in a situation where law abiding citizens don't have a weapon and a criminal does. Would legalizing concealed carry have made a difference? It really depends on the situation. One thing's for sure, making the weapon illegal sure didn't stop this bitch from stabbing anyone.

The point is, when guns are easy to get hold of, more people, regardless of their mental disposition, will get hold of them.

Use to live in melb and attended the uni in question.... Also would have NFI where to obtain a gun illegally.

La Trobe did have a shooting a few years back - one of the bar workers got a little peeved at the way in which he was dismissed so he returned with a rifle (was one of the days i decided to have a hangover luckily).

No, the point is criminals get guns and you can't stop them from doing so.

According to the 1997 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those possessing a gun in commission of their crime, the source of the gun was from -

* a flea market or gun show for fewer than 2%
* a retail store or pawnshop for about 12%
* family, friends, a street buy, or an illegal source for 80%

Of course, your response will be "they got those guys because they're so easy to get"

A study in 2003 by Gary Mauser, Professor at Simon Fraser University in Canada found that restrictive firearm legislation has failed to reduce gun violence in Australia, Canada, or Great Britain.

Why? Because - when guns are outlawed only outlaws have guns.
