Last night I asked a Russian friend of mine about Russian scammers.

Actually, I tried to be as polite as possible with my question:

Me: There are a lot of scammers in my business but for some reason, percentage wise, there appear to be more crooked Russians than any other Nationality. Why is that?"

My Russian friend: Because they are Russian. Russians will screw over Non-Russians in a heartbeat especially if the other person is an American. Russians, even those in America, hate most Americans.

There were 25 of us at the table. 23 were Russian and they all agreed.

Kinda sad.

NinjaSteve 05-07-2007 02:34 PM

So do they hate you? Or are you not part of "most" Americans?

I asked him the same question.

They like me...They have known me for about 7 years and since they accept me, their other Russian friends accept me.

It made me feel all warm and fuzzy. :winkwink:

Were these Russians Jewish? Serious question.

I've talked to various Jews before whom stated basically the same thing.

I don't think so, it's even more of an "honor" since racism is quite popular in russia and eastern europe.

stfuvt 05-07-2007 02:42 PM

since they are millions, they high percent of russian scammers can be explained.

Depends on where/who I guess. We have a large Russian community in LA and I have quite a few good casual Russian friends for 10+ years. I do agree most have the 'shark' and 'dog eat dog' mentality and are very materialistic and they'll be the first to admit it openly as Aaron pointed out. Back in the 80's and 90's, they had a monopoly on PI (personal injury) scams here in LA with everyone on the take from the 'victims', to the doctors, to the chiropractors and even insurance adjusters/agents. One of the Russian guys I know even got defrauded by his brother..

Right on man, you're IN.

You've penetrated their inner circle, they trust you.

now to bide your time, waiting, waiting.... until that perfect time to strike arrives.

The Koreans had a pretty good thing going too. :2 cents:

pornguy 05-08-2007 11:02 AM

Aaron. Did they bother to add in the fact, that at least in Russia, the law will do little or nothing about scamming people especially americans???

Dirty F 05-08-2007 11:11 AM

Often i wonder if they rather scam people online and mess less than spending that same time on legal work and make more money.

I have the feeling they start scamming from the moment they have internet connection and dont even bother doing anything else.

I'm all for disconneting that country from the net. It would solve SOOOOOOOOOOO fucking much problems its not even funny anymore.

The way I see it, if you claim someone is a certain way strictly because of their race or nationality your nothing more than a stereotycal individual. Just like with anything in life, there will always be the good and the bad, if you believe 100% of everything is bad than obviously there is hate in your blood.

borked 05-08-2007 12:48 PM

well, it just goes to show what power the law has on us all. Irrespective of whether it's annoying or killing us for a minute, if the law of the land says there's nothing wrong with it, then of course, people will do it. 99.5% of people here would do it I'm sure, if tomorrow, the US govt said - scam away, we don't give a fuck.

Look at the way the RIAA has its knickers in a twist over allofmp3.com... Russia has it's own laws to protect the owners of copyright music that are quite poliarised ones from the way the US handles it. And, boy does it piss off the RIAA when they are getting their pockets burned, since they can't pay for international law.

Internation law is one thing, international control is quite another.

Nice group of friends you have there. So did any of them admitt that they were scammers ? Odds are if there were 23 Russians there at least 20 of them had to be scammers. :1orglaugh

And much of that hatred is towards Russians, at least where the net is concerned.

I've had occasion to speak with several people who are clients or potential clients of various singles sites, you know Lava Life, LoveHappens, Match.com etc. What I'm hearing more and more is that Russian scammers are posting fake ads using pictures of models and making them appear to be local people. Then when they get someone emailing them and wanting to get to know the bogus persona they reveal they are indeed from Russia, but the still keep up the pretence of being the male or female model.

At some point in the flow of conversation over time, they ask for money so they "can afford to come and meet you".... and people pay, and never see the person they've become interested in nor the money they send.

I don't know if assholes in other countries are doing this but I've heard of several out of Russia who are, and it's a pretty dirty rotten thing to do, preying on people's lives and their vulnerabilities.

I suppose you could say people are stupid for falling for it. I was a member of a few of those dating sites years ago, and was contacted several times by supposed Russian "Women" wanting to talk and have something more develop. It was as simple as pressing them for a bit more substantial proof that they are who they say they are and they get scared off every time. But not everyone is as net-savvy as some of us here. A lot of people out there are vulnerable, lonely and all too trusting.

Thus it's no wonder some people feel a kind of hatred towards those to pull such crap.

I don't blame them a bit.

90%+ of the people I catch trying to spam my sites, hijack contact forms, etc. are either from Russia or China.

I may just give them all a great big 403 and be done with it.

Scammers or not Russians are the smartest people in the world

mortenb 05-08-2007 03:24 PM

According to page 2 of this PDF (http://fraud.org/stats/2006/internet.pdf) from fraud.org, US and Canadian citizens commit 62% of all internet fraud.. heck, 10% of the fraud they registrered originates from California..

According to the IC3, which is a part of the FBI, the US is responsible for 60.9% of all internet fraud cases. Russia is in the 8. place with 1.1%. Oh, and they too have registrered California as the scamming capital of the world.
(source: http://www.ic3.gov/media/annualreports.aspx)

Why are Californians scammers?

I find this hard to believe. I will gladly share with anyone the IP addresses of every spammer I've ever caught trying to spam my sites (guestbooks, blog comments), abuse contact forms, or aggressively crawl the site with bots. You can do a whois on every one of those IPs and see they're all from Korea, Russia, China, or Southeast Asia. Almost none of them are from the USA.

Also, doing a whois on the domains they're spamming, each of them are from the countries I've named (as well as some from Eastern Europe)

dav3 05-08-2007 03:50 PM

I have known two Russians personally. One was one of the coolest dudes I've met. The other, gave some lame excuse for not paying up when he got smoked in a game of beer pong. Not only did he not pay on that bet, but he started making up retarded rules while we were playing, but still got smoked.

Lesson learned, Russians have shitty hand-eye coordination, but can be really cool too.

Although pretty offensive, this statement is very true as well. It's not a russian only problem, but it affects all nations with alot of poverty. Let's face it, most russians earn less than 500$ a month and with an internet connection, they suddenly have the opportunity to get out of this misery...and since the legal system in russia is far from caring about internet fraud comitted in the US, it's a fast, easy and effective way for them to make money without any risk of getting caught.
