Smoking Woman on Oxygen Tank Dies After Lighting Cigarette

(Boston-AP) -- An 81-year-old Boston resident became the second Massachusetts woman in eight days to die from a fire caused by smoking while on an oxygen tank.

Yolanda Amico, a lifelong resident of East Boston, died at Massachusetts General Hospital after sustaining burns when her nightgown caught fire. She tried to light a cigarette while breathing 100 percent oxygen with a mask.

Last Sunday, a 77-year-old Athol woman with emphysema and on an oxygen tank, lit a cigarette, and too died when her house caught on fire.

Fire officials warn that pure oxygen and fire are a dangerous combination.
