Finally out of the hospital
My gastric bypass was to be on May 1st, all was fine until I awoke in the recovery room and was told they could not complete the surgery.
it seems as though my anatomy is a bit different and my stomach is on the opposite side and if they were to continue there would definitely be serious complications...so we decided to go with the lap band...two surgeries in two days. I went home on Thursday and started experiencing some serious diarrhea and nausea...I was checked back into the hospital early Friday morning and spent two really rough nights there...I was released today feeling much better. Anyway...I just thought I'd drop the news. |
Speedy recovery man..hope it works out
|
I don't understand how they didn't know where your stomach was? Couldn't an ultrasound or MRI or something tell that beforehand?
|
hope your recovery goes good man
|
your fucking lucky man
my father had a triple bypass and valve replacement and he was in there for a month! they didnt even know what was wrong with him lol |
Glad to hear you're feeling better. :)

Eros, you got your insides cut open twice within two days. And based on what you yourself say, it sounds to me like the medical staff didn't even take the minimal precautions to make sure the operation would go smothly. That's what happens when doctors turn a serious operation into a volume business. It's shameful. Frankly, you are lucky to have survived at all considering the outrageously high mortality rate for these kind of procedures.
I am not trying to be a wise ass man, and I hope you recover quickly. When you do recover you have to start the important work of learning to eat healthy and exercise. It's a change you have to make in your mind and in your routine and in your habits which will lead to feeling and looking and living better. And it has nothing to do with trying to constrict your stomach or wiring your jaw shut or any other such end runs and dodges around the real issues that overweight people have with food and exercise. If you need any weightlifting or healthy cooking advice I would be happy to assist when you get started. |
Wow is that where you've been for the last 18 months?
|
I dont get that operation.. just out of curiosity.. couldnt you cut down your daily diet by 1/4 then later.. another 1/4, etc.. cut the junk food, exercise, etc..?

My partner has had a lap band done. File away my ICQ number because there'll come a time when you need to talk to someone who has already had it done and we'll give you any advice we can. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and quite often the doctors don't tell you everything you need to know. Two years ago Marie almost died after she became malnourished - you wouldn't have known to look at her but when one smart doctor finally identified the problem she said that Marie was probably only weeks away from checking out. And before some fleabrain comes in here sprouting bullshit about losing weight don't waste your breath. For some people there are medical reasons for putting on weight that just can't be controlled any other way than via a lap band or something similar. |

If you don't understand how that could happen search Google for Hashimoto's Disease and you'll find it all there. |
out of the four people i know who had it it done two died of complications afterwards. be real sensitive to yourself. i hear the mini by pass which is newer is safer and easier recovery. if i had the money i would do it tomorrow. ive lost and gained about 500 lbs in my lifetime,im starting another diet and im getting tired of the fight.

sounds like a lot of trouble for something that could have been resolved with some long term good diet and exercise routines.

My guess is you're either one of those people who has never had a weight problem, or you did have a weight problem and now you have the zeal of a born again christian when it comes to telling everyone else what they should and shouldn't eat. The point of the surgery isn't just to make your stomach smaller so that you eat less. You "can" still cheat if you have a lapband or a gastric bypass, you could consume thousands of calories per day of liquid and gain weight, it has happened. The reason the surgery is successful for people who follow the program is that the nerve endings in your stomach that tell your brain that you're full are in the top of your stomach. When you have the lapband or a gastric bypass those nerve endings get stimulated by just a few ounces of food. (the part of your stomach that is bypassed is the bottom) This way the person still gets the "OMG I'm sooooo stuffed" feeling, while only eating 1000 calories or so per day. If you were to restrict your calories to that low a level without this "help" you'd have headaches, fatigue, dizzyness, etc etc and you wouldn't be able to lead a productive life. However since your brain thinks that you're stuffed, it doesn't send off those distress signals to your body that it would if it thought you were starving, so you're able to lead a productive life while eating very few calories. |

Sorry, the only ignorance on this subject is on your part. An adult male or female who eats only 1000 calories in a day is not eating properly or in a healthy manner unless they are well under 100 lbs. Trying to get the "oh my god I am so stuffed" feeling on a daily basis is exactly what led to their obesity problem in the first place. Trying to cut up your insides, and deform your internal organs with the intention of tricking your body to make this feeling happen with an abnormally low amount of food is a bad idea on it's face. There is no one who gets these barbaric operations who ends up looking or feeling good afterwards, assuming that they even survive the shock and trauma to their bodies in the aftermath of the procedure in the first place. They are just going to end up shrunken and weak until they eat or drink their way back up to their original weight, but now with damage to their internal organs to boot. If instead they had eaten five or so healthy meals through out the day and exercised daily- which the doctors who pick your pockets with this procedure recommend that you do anyway- then a person could eat enough to be full (but not stuffed to the gills) and actually feel good and have energy without the expense and risk of these ridiculous surgeries. There is just no defense for these procedures, period. |
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
|
Sorry to hear of the complications, but glad to hear everything's looking up now, my friend :)
|
I would have the same question - how would an Ultrasound not determine that?
|
Jim Gunn has this thread covered so I am not required here. Preach on brother!

Edit: Double post. :(

Get well soon..:)

What actually happened is that they put the poor guy under general anesthesia- which is risky in and of itself, especially if you are overweight and unhealthy- and then they started cutting him open. His body went into shock of course and they immediately decided to abandon the procedure as too dangerous, were luckily able to stabilize him and sew him back up without him expiring on the operating table as so many do. After they wiped the sweat off of their brow they made up a cock-in-bull story about his stomach being "on the other side" and suggested a different procedure so that they wouldn't have to give him his money back. Then they performed willful malpractice by cutting him open again a day later. And he thinks they they did him a favor! Anyway, good luck with your recovery Eros, I want you to succeed after all you have been through. |

If only we could all be as smart as you. |
Jim your concern is very cool man, like it or not these surgeries have the longest long term success rate. its not all calories and self control.
|
I hope you feel better soon hun.
:) |
