Anyone here have a mainstream blog?

I was thinking of doing a mainstream blog. Some of them are HUGE, like Daily kos and engadget, perez hilton, tech crunch, etc. Is it hard to get it going? I dont even know where youd get traffic.
I look at them and think pfffft, I could do that. They look way easier than making galleries everyday, but at least in adult theres an endless supply of traffic and sources to get it from.

Easy to get traffic but can you make money off of it.

The problem with mainstream is the commission percentages suck BUT I have to assume they shave less.

Isnt it all about adsense though? I was reading problogger.net and he was talking about his adsense checks. When he started he was doing like $1 day, then 2, and his recent charts are like $20k a month from adsense

Relying solely on Ad Sense for revenue kind of scares me. I've done the whole "build around one revenue source" before and it turned into a disaster.

I'm also thinking of starting up some mainstream blogs, I'm going to go for a mass amount though and then use adsense

I just got a mainstream blog going.
Traffic is hard regardless, but you are welcome more places in mainstream, and others will feature you, link with you, exchange articles, and there are a TON of social networking sites for blogs, that bring in a little extra traffic.
I personally am not a big fan of adsense, the one I just got up is aff links and banners that are related to the subject.
I think adsense sucks, and it takes away from the design, BIG TIME!

If I am ever able to sell banner spots, or featured listings, I will do it myself and set my own price. plain and simple.

It's a different world, but if you can master the limited options in Adult, you should have no problem taking advantage of Social Networking to promote a blog.

I like it, and I'd be more than happy to show you around with a crash course in mainstream blogging.

You would be surprised what kind of opportunities present themselves to you.

Exactly.

I just started my first mainstream blog. Just my personal rantings. I never thought about trying to make one for $$ though. Wouldnt celeb be the best way to go to get traffic or are there already to many out there?

I just started working on a celeb blog myself but I'm going to combine it with "train wreck" type news. Anything that makes fun of others and makes people feel better about themselves is golden IMO...

agreed, however to get things off the ground - Adsense is great. Alot of the mainstream affiliate programs won't accept you unless you have a certain amount of traffic....

not sure about adsense these days ... every time I use them on a site I wait for it to get canned for some bullshit reason. i haven't had a decent check from them in over 6 months.

I just started a blog for my parents (http://www.4wdriving.com) which we are promoting through offline channels ... we'll have some press starting soon. if they make $50 a month off it on adsense we'll be happy ;-)

Sometimes its just a case of trying something old skool & building from there ...

If anyone has tips on doing a gamer blog I'd love to hear them. I'm putting one together now.

I try to get $1 per day from each site ... then, when you have 10,000 sites ... :upsidedow

I love mainstream blogs. We've ramped them from PR0 to PR5 in a month, ranked them on the first page of Google consistently, and have seen traffic skyrocket.

When we wrote Autoblogger Pro, we had our own purposes in mind, and we use the product heavily for those purposes. Chio is a magician with some of the shit he is able to get Google to do with his sites.

Yes I have a lot. I also know that mainstream is a much easier traffic source to capture and convert.

Check out autoblogger pro.

ABP is a blog of the gods program. Numerous #1 listings for big terms. PR out the ying yang... etc.

I use it to supplement many of my mainstream blogs but it works well on full auto as well.
