Digg Goes Bananas

Quote:

A wide-scale user revolt is disrupting popular social news networking Digg.
It's a protest over Digg acquiescing to MPAA pressure and deleting a
15,000+ dugg story about a crack for the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray DRM system.

Now, every single story on the front page contains the cracked number in
some way.

The madness began after not only was the initial story deleted, but the
user's account was deleted as well. Other people who submitted stories
linking to the number also got their accounts deleted and their sites
received takedown notices. Even people who submitted stories about the
deleting of other accounts, stories which did not contain the number, also
got deleted. That's when things really got bonkers.

Major issue for many and the scary thing about the whole socail web thing.

Slashdot had a post about that yesterday and almost every comment had

Here is the first hand account of the article that was submitted to digg.

Also, I believe that digg (or diggnation) has some connections (i.e., is sponsored by) HD-DVD. This is another reason why people went ape shit.

Isn't this the same (or very similar) as posting the serial for Photoshop CS3?

That number is the 'password' that will make copying the content possible.

Despite this no-DRM heavy views of the slashdot/Ars/digg crowd, I don't understand how that this falls under 'free speech'.

I'm no lawyer, but find it pretty lame you can try and censor / copyright / whatever a number. Say two people have the same ATM pin numbers - which one's in violation of the other's "secret code" ?

I have no idea... *shrug*

gfy will get deleted too just for linking to the story that links to that thing

I agree, but you can easily argue that the serial to any program (like PS) is just string of letters and numbers. So is it fundamentally different than a number? The fact that the HD-DVD key is just a hex number, doesn't really matter. However, 'copywriting' a number is still a little weird.
