did we figure out how to get rid of word press comment spam?
1000's a day, bastards
|
I have come to the conclusion that the only way to truly rid yourself of it is to disable pinging
|
Askimet catches 99.9% of what comes through here, but it does mark trackbacks as spam improperly.

It depends on the kind of website that you are running. I have comments disabled on some blogs. But when the comments are enabled: I use the following....
- Akismet - Check all boxes @ Before a comment appears (options>discussion) - Comment Moderation: set at 1 - If a comment contains the following words then it will be held in the moderation queue: Code:
-online And last but not least these 5 steps: http://www.amsterdamn.org/2006/11/17...its-your-blog/ Please keep in mind that it's almost impossible to stop comment spam. Good luck :thumbsup |
It's just the queue has fricken 9000 comments a day on some of my blogs. I list them as spam and delete them but they still keep coming. I wish i could only allow comments from members I have approved.

Akismet and captchas.

Not sure about newer versions of WP, but I've used captchas in the past and they worked incredibly well.

"This plugin for Wordpress 1.5.2, 2.0.x and 2.1 asks the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question. This is intended to prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot."
http://sw-guide.de/wordpress/plugins...am-protection/ I'm using it and it works nice Thank me later ;) |

Akismet
Used to get 1 spam a minute, now ... nada ...it catches everything |
If you have comments disabled, Bad Behavior (set on strict) will prevent anyone reaching your comment script directly. This saves you remembering to delete or empty the comment script after each WP upgrade.
If you have comments open, use a combination of Bad Behavior (set on normal) and Spam Karma. That is usually enough to prevent all spam, without moderation, but there are lots of settings in SK which can be tightened up if not. In particular "Stopwatch" is worth setting to strong and so is "Post Age and Activity" (use 10-15 days for that, since the majority of automated spam hits older posts). Akismet (I believe) is good. But it is a commercial service and free users get the slowest responses from their servers, which is not good if you have any serious traffic. |
Spam Karma does a pretty damn good job, in fact when I set it to "mean bitch" nothing ever gets through
