Bandwidth Question

Ok, this may seem to be a very newbish question, and ok it just is a very newbish question, but fuck, I honestly have no clue....

How do you determine how much bandwidth you are going to use in a month??

I mean, if i have one video on my site that is 1GB file size and someone downloads that video, does that mean I just used 1GB? And if 300 people download that file, then I used 300GB??

Also, what does unmetered bandwidth mean??

What is a good amount of bandwidth to have included with your hosting plan to run a reality pay site?

Thanks in Advance for your help....

Yes, every download of that 1GB file will be about 1GB of bandwidth (depending on how the host measures bandwidth, it may be 20% more for the overhead of the TCP connection). Unmetered connections are like unmetered utilities; it doesn't matter how much you use, you're only charged the flat fee. Just be careful about the speed of the connection. Many unmetered plans stick you with a 1 or 2 Mbs pipe, which won't be enough for anything but a light-weight site. You'll want about 10 Mbs with the option of bumping up to 100 Mbs as your site gains in popularity.

Thanks for the info!!

Who is a good hosting company to go with that offers 10mbps with the capability of going to 100??

I guess spam me with hosting companies guys!!!

if your looking for a dedicated 10mbps line, expect some BIG monthly bills

Ive been looking around a LARGE portion of the hosting market lately, and come accross a huge range of prices.

Some are expensive because it's good quality
Some are expensive because they have high mark-ups

Ive decided on a UK host I think because I want to be able to go and physically visit the servers that i will be paying for.

Maybe a tad extreme but i read a lot of forum posts on webmaster forums about providers lying about a ton of things.

-saying they own servers when really they are resellers
-lying about the specs of their servers' hardware
-lying about their connection speed
-providing 'misleading' info on bandwidth
-making out they have a tech team, when really the entire thing is a 1 man job.

list goes on. Just do a ton of research first, especially if you wanna find a host for the long term

Thanks for the input, and i am definitely going to research this in full as i have heard alot of the same things myself.

i am currently looking at servage, they offer virtual hosting with 3000 GB transfer a month, but i cannot find out what the overages are, if they have other packages available, etc... Does anyone have any info on Servage they can share??

Goodings Media 04-28-2007 01:38 PM

yeah servage was my choice as well.

then I read that the bandwitdh figures are bullshit, as soon as you start using most of that they bottleneck your account on "fair usage"

i may be wrong as this is just on what other people have written on forums. I think theirs is one of those "if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is"

Apart from the clowns on ebay, you can't find ANYONE offering their kind of bandwidth and disk space at those prices. Here's an e-mail I got from their sales dpt. though.

Our clustered servers are physically located in our own top datacenter in norhtern Germany with more than 120 direct peering including (WorldCom, Level3 & GlobalCrossing), ensuring ultra fast connectivity to any country ˆ world wide.

Apart from the excellent electronic infrastructure Germany is a seismic inactive area. Unlike many smaller companies we own all our equipment and our own techs are standing by 24/7 incase a problem should arise.

The datacenter and all its servers are owned 100% by Servage Hosting. We are looking forward to hosting your website :)
now I have heard clustered servers work much better for media. I didn't get any info on their connection speed though (I did ask)

Pricelessprod 04-28-2007 02:07 PM

I sent servage an email as well..........

---------------------------------------------------
"Thank you for your interest in Servage Hosting. I am sorry to say that we offer only one very good package which is unfortunately not upgradable. You cannot buy additional bandwidth even at extra cost.

We are looking forward to hosting your website :)

Kind regards,
Scott, Servage Hosting

So basically if my pay site grows big, they will fuck me. Can't have that. so back to the drawing board I guess.

Any info on webair Anyone?????

Pricelessprod,
1Mbit = approximatley 316G per month. And with that price you would be paying about $.25 per Gig.

Personally, I love ServerBeach; I've got an Athlon 2200+ with 1GB of RAM and 80 GB of disk for $80/month. The network link is 10 Mbs with 2TB of monthly transfer, but for $20 more you can make it unmetered. Another $100 gets you up to a 100Mbs link, but then you're paying around a grand for the unmetered capability--you certainly won't need it when you get started, but it's nice to know that your server will be able to grow along with your site.

The above link includes a referral code that nets you $100 off after 90 days; if you'd prefer not use referral codes, the direct link is http://serverbeach.com.

Depends what you're doing with it; that particular machine is running the 10 GB database for http://eveknows.com and having no trouble at all. You'll have a hard time finding something in that price range sporting more power.

With the deal Way3 just gave me, I am going with them. if you need good hosting hit them up seriously.

I looked at your plans and to be honest, way3 is over 50% cheaper and i am getting 3100+ bandwidth a month and an overage charge of less than 10cents per mbit.

That is for a dedicated, fully managed server.

Your prices for half the bandwidth with 4 times the amount of overage charges are double their prices. So, while I am sure your service is excellent and very good, i also need to be cost effective, so as I said, above, with the deal way3 gave me, i have got to go with them.
