domain names? .com Vs .net ??

Just curious as to what the vast experience of GFY thought about the difference in getting a domain name thats a ".com" or a ".net" ??

Are people less likely to try a ".net" name as a type - in ???

Thanks..
I.

so if you were registering a new domain and you got the ".com" version, would you bother getting the ".net" version as well??

depends for what?

if you plan on growing a big site (big paysite, big tgp) then yes, but for a simple blog or just for spamming the SE's, it may not be necessary

Yes.

US, and much of the western world, types-in .COM

:warning

.com beats .net hands down.

With that said, there have been some successful .nets and also the other top level domains like de.lici.us (sp?) have been creatively using the rest pretty effectively.

For the most part, people just mentally default to .com, so if you're in the widget biz and your competitor has widget.com, anything you do with widget.net will only generate accidental traffic for the .com site.

I've found myself mistyping some of our own .net sites, so we have made it policy to only register .com unless there was some extroardinarilly compelling reason to have the name regardless of the TLD.

yep .com beats .net for type ins for sure, but if your making a blog or something for SE's I don't think it really matters. If your going for type ins though you would want to stick with .com for sure.

I thought this was common sense. .com's > .net's

Yes you should get them both. I have both the .com and the .net. They are cheap to buy so it makes sense to just get both.

We buy the .net if we have the .com, come on,,,it's only $8 more.

I dumped all my .net names and have only .coms

Sometimes the .net names are good for marketing tests or for closely related sites.

.nets arent that bad, but i would buy an .org before a .net
