Remember: America is a continent, not a country...

Just to remember the ignorant usa people that America is a continent, not a country.

In German, we say Amerika to name the whole continent.

In Spanish, we say America to name the whole continent.

In Swedish we say Amerika to name the whole continent.

In other 34 languages we use, either America or Amerika to name the whole continent.

In asian language they use the equivalent to America to name the whole continent.

The only ignorants are those from USA (80% of this forum, lol, I will get a lot of hate replies) who think that America is USA... :1orglaugh

They will never learn, and I don't fucking care. I just want to make the other 20% know, that US citizen were, are, and will always be a bunch of ignorant idiots.

Even British maps show that America is a continent, not a dumb ignorant country.

So, we can say that it's not a problem from the english culture, but from the USA empty and stupid culture. :1orglaugh

Now, let's see all those US guys who will start feeding this thread with hate. :pimp

TeenCat 04-26-2007 05:48 PM

It is a continent......NORTH America......and there is even a.....SOUTH
America....wow amazing

Damian_Maxcash 04-26-2007 05:52 PM

Its an English language problem.

In common usage, in most "English" speaking countries "America" refers to the USA.

You are also wrong when you say it refers to a 'continent' - it refers to 'continents'.

Actually you are wrong. I have relatives in Italy, Spain, Cuba, England and Germany. They do not say America to the whole continent because they are educated. We are a part of a continent, North America. Our country is the United States of America. We do not make up the whole continent.

Kard63 04-26-2007 10:25 PM

I completely disagree. It is people from other countries who started the trend of calling the united states "America". For years I resisted doing the same, but after talking to so many people from outside my country and noticing they do it a lot more than people from the united states I gave up.

Actually agree... just thinking... most of the people I know refer to the US as either "the states" or "USA".

Sounds "odd" if eg.. you said to were flying to "America" - they'd prob wonder what you were trying to hide about the destination :1orglaugh

Since 80% of the forum uses the term, and understands that the United States of America, the United States, and America can be used interchangably; I think you're the one in the wrong.

It all depends on the context in which it is used, but since you don't understand what context is, you see all words as concrete. As a tip from me to you, all words are NOT concrete.

Yeah, that's why we are the most advanced and richest country in the world and now please name all states of the USA as you sure know them. If we should know every small country in the world you should know every US state as most of those states are bigger then many countries out there...

BigFire 04-27-2007 04:27 AM

You forgot to post the name of the beautiful country where you are from. Let's hear it!

StuartD 04-27-2007 04:28 AM

Well, it is the United States OF America. The Big Mac of McDonalds isn't called McDonalds. It's called a Big Mac.

Anyway, the only reason for the confusion is the fact that the US has never really had a name, it has a description. Canada is a name. Mexico is a name. The United States is what they are. A bunch of states that are united together. And therefore, they became the United States of America. But they could have just as easily been the United States of North America.

Think about it... how many countries do you know that is a description of what they are, rather than a proper name?

I'm surprised they refer to themselves as Americans instead of "sacks of mostly water".

Neither of these statements has much bearing on why the US calls itself America nor much bearing on his initial statement. Infact, your statements are akin to "Yeah well, my dad can beat up your dad!"

America refers to the country, like Americans refers to its citizens. North America relates to the continent, like North Americans relates to the citizens of the countries in the continent.

Simple really.

I think your opening statement of "In blah blah we say blah blah to name the whole continent" shows how the details get lost in translation. There is no continent called America, theres North & South America.

directfiesta 04-27-2007 06:20 AM

When I look at a dollar bill, I see " United States of America "

When I look at a passport,I see " United States of America "

...and so on ....

Europeans are residents of Europe ... It can be a French , an Italian , a German... but they all are EUROPEANS , tough their countries are France, Italy and Germany respectively....
