Why doesn't everyone use wmv?
 

I noticed most TGP posters out there don't use wmv. I'm about to get into the submission game myself and tried mpeg versus wmv. So far there is absolutely no comparison. Do most TGPs just not allow wmv or am I missing something?

Mac and Linux users often will go out of their way not to have M$ stuff on their machines.

I look at it like this: Mpeg uses less bandwidth, MOV runs the smoothest, WMV is the most compatible.

I can fit in a 640x480 20 second clip into the same file size as an mpeg file with only half the resolution and 25% less quality.. just seems silly to use mpeg.

mpeg is the most compatible. it will run in machines running windows media player or quicktime..

wmv dosnt work on mac machines

Well more importantly how many TGP owners here have wmv banned?

WMV and FLV are my favs.

jesus, what macs are you all running that have issues with WMV's? LOL

i didn't think wmv had issues since osx came out, I don't have wmv issues on my mac ibook

and whoever said mpeg uses less bandwidth must not know how to encode a wmv properly, wmv has BY FAR the best compression

as for tgp's, i heard once that tgp's require for the video files to be a minimum of 2mb...if that is true than there is your reason, wmv can be full screen and less than 2mb

FLV will be the new standard, well it already is.. But adult is behind of course :)

Flip4Mac is your friend. It allows you to play WMV files in QT and if you edit in Final Cut like I do it allows you to export WMV files straight from FC with an upgrade...

I thought everyone uses vhs...?

mpeg.........you can watch in any machine...........but for wmv u need plugin to see beside Windows

we use WMV

From a webmaster-to-user point of view, wmv isn't bad. If you know what you are doing you can keep the filesize low and the quality decent enough (for galleries and things like that).

From a webmaster-to-webmaster porint of view, I prefer huge mpeg's over wmv's. Yes, I know most noob-affiliates prefer wmv's they can just chop into little pieces but real webmasters ofcourse know how to encode stuff themselves :)

From a user point of view, I HATE WMV. The quality doesn't even come close to for example Xvid (in an avi container).

yeah, but from a porn preview standpoint (which we are talking about here), that is very impractical

True, that's why I said that from a webmaster-to-user point of view wmv isn't bad. However, there are better options out there: swf+flv for example.

wmv's are still a windows media format, and even thought they're more widely accepted than they have been in the past, they're still very much more limited than some other formats, such as mpeg.

Even if it's only a small % that can't get wmv's to play right, it's still a %.

it would be so fucking nice if we could all just agree to use FLV's.. it would make my life so much easier :winkwink:

Realistically flash will take over video on the web.

New flash server technology is become affordable.

mgp idiots will never let that happen, hell most of them still won't take videos under 2mb in size (i checked around and actually saw this rule on some mgp's)

it will be a long long time before the porn industry fully embraces the concept of flash video

When I click on a wmv from a gallery, it has to download the wmv to my computer then open it with wmp. So I now have a video file on my computer which has to be manually removed later. PLUS wmp has to open up to run the file.

WMV is fucking annoying plain and simple.
