What resolution do you use to design new sites?

The topic pretty much sums it up. Do you design your sites with 800x600 in mind or do you make sure it looks best when viewed on a higher resolution?

640 x 480

800x600..

All those gadgets to customize the layout for high res users
takes it toll..

Keep it simple. They just wanna see porn.

800x600

Some stats programs show screen resolutions of your visitors. Check those out and see what the average is.

for surfer-oriented stuff, still 640x480
for webmaster-oriented stuff 800x600

I build websites to be viewable at 800 x 600. Too few of my viewers have anything less. Of course, they are generally optimized for a larger browser window. (People with 1024 or higher resolutions don't use full-screen browsers as much.)

800 x 600. Sites designed for 640x480 often just look 'empty' if someones running 1024 and as 640 is only a very small % I'd rather focus on making it look good for 800 upwards.

I have 1280x1024 and I'm always browsing full screen.

Master_Yoba 08-19-2002 04:29 AM

yes 800 X 600 is standard for now

Juge 08-19-2002 04:51 AM

I believe I already answered this, let me look...

"50% of all surfers surf at 800x600 - it is well worth it to make your screen viewable by that resolution. And if you consider that the 'stupid' surfers are more likely to make you $$, then realize that the 'stupid' surfers are more likely to be surfing in a lower resolution."

dinkz 08-19-2002 05:10 AM

800x600 for sure

kinkyplace 08-19-2002 05:53 AM

When designing websites I use my New Year's resolution: "I will make more money"

SpyCam 08-19-2002 06:11 AM

Here are the numbers off of one of our sites that gets a mix of SE, TGP, and LL traffic.

Resolution Computers %
640x480 670,746 8.17
800x600 4,997,918 60.88
1024x768 2,354,968 28.69
1280x1024 171,463 2.09
1600x1200 13,842 0.17

As you can see if you don't at least make sure that it is surfable at 640 x 480 then you are loosing almost 9% of you customers, and they are most likely the newbies that will pull out the CC :)

Always 800x600, and probably always will. I use a 1600x1200 desktop and never browse full screen, so 800x600 works well even in my resolution. :2 cents:
