crash: car + truck collide in Melbourne tunnel (HQ PICS + VID)

This is not your normal monitoring camera footage, the accident happened right behind a car fitted with a camera, so it's up close. There has been talk that the car was possibly a cause of the accident due to them trying to get footage of the truck tailgating them.

This happened in the Domain tunnel in Melbourne, which runs in the opposite direction to the Burnley tunnel where 3 people were killed in an accident & fire a month ago.

The root cause of the accident was that the car and truck were trying to change into the same lane, but the car was in the truck's blind spot. Very lucky that the car didn't fully rotate around the front and hit/get squashed against the tunnel wall.

Hmm I don't know that would be so important, to me it seems it's more where the truck hit that saved him. If the car had been further back he would have pushed the merc over, or possibly even got a wheel over him. In the former case it could have been a lot worse if the merc ended up richocheting off the opposite wall, or another car. Still, must have been scary as hell for the driver; I bet he's glad he has a modern car with strong pillars!

..bump..

RawAlex 04-25-2007 02:39 PM

remember too, right hand drive, so the driver was on the side right against the front of the truck...

Ah, yeah, and the car was also on the passenger side of the truck (which is why it's a blind spot). Should have mentioned that in my first post, sorry.

It's scary enough seeing the grille of a multi-tonne truck sitting a car length behind you... imagine what it would be like to have it pushing against your driver side window!!

Didn't ACA strike gold when this happened right in the middle of a story on the dangers of trucks! Definitely a great video :)

Did we ever hear from the truckie rowan?

I think Today Tonight had the truckie saying that the ACA vehicle was speeding up and slowing down, which is why he gave up and changed lanes. I haven't seen the actual story though.

Interesting that the chick driving the ACA vehicle was still moving away at speed several seconds after the accident. I sure hope they stopped further along and offered some assistance.

are you really suprised?
im suprised that the car actually got at that angle seeing how its a fucking MERCEDEZ BENZ
the fucking stability control on that car is godly and would take a fucking train for that to budge
and the drive is stupid for giving the brakes

Lykos 04-25-2007 05:03 PM

jesus,looks scary

nekrom 04-25-2007 05:31 PM

Ya I saw that on ACA the other night. They also replayed the full 2mins lenght of the clip prior to the accident to show that the woman driving with back window camera wasn't acting up.

She was just driving like normal for the full length of the tunnel, traffic pasing by in other lanes like normal, then the truck merged without looking and bang.

And yes they did stop to check on the smash on the other side of the tunnel. Just a bit hard to stop on a freeway with a truck pushing a car behind you. :D

Another accident in the tunnel today involving a car and truck... from the TV report I saw it's similar to the above accident, the driver's side of the car is damaged.

That was because of moisture on the road and below freezing temperatures, causing black ice. We don't have that particular problem in Melbourne. :)

i wonder why this accident actually happened? didn't the truck driver see the benz?

Apparently they reported the next day that the truckie didn't see the car even after he was stuck to his front, he thought he had a problem with his tires! It almost looks like he's accelerating once he collects the merc, but that's probably because the surrounding traffic is slowing.

jdc 04-26-2007 05:59 AM

still alive..good for him..

GeorgeM 04-26-2007 06:25 AM

it looks like a movie clip

d00t 04-26-2007 07:44 AM

cool1 04-26-2007 09:12 AM

looked like it was the truckers fault

Tom_PM 04-26-2007 09:30 AM

Notice the truck turns on it's turn signal RIGHT as it begins to change lanes. Thats not how you do it.

Second, notice the car has NO turn signal on at all!
Thats not how you do it either.

Next time you drive, please follow the rules. It's seriously very simple. You signal, you look, you change lanes. In that order.. doh.

I was taught an extra step, which is probably implied in your list...

1. Check your mirrors
2. Signal
3. Head check (look over your shoulder into your blind spot)
4. Move

rowan 04-26-2007 10:14 PM

In addition to the above list, common sense should tell you,

"don't change lanes into an adjacent vehicle's blind spot"
