Planning Uber-Crazy Road Trip - Anybody Been To Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia?

yo guys, me and my buddies are planning a super crazy road-trip right now and i thought id ask on gfy if anybody has ever been to those countries for some advice.

especially interesting for us are, morocco (casablanca, agadir, marrakech, fes), algeria and tunisia.
has anybody ever been to those countries? will regular european cellphones work there? what else is to take care of when going there?

here is a pic of the planned route we will be going in a few months

I've never been to Morocco but wow, that sounds cool...

Shoehorn! 04-24-2007 09:24 AM

I've never been to any of those three places, but I have a friend from Morocco who invited me to come for a visit. It looks pretty cool, so be sure to let us know how it went. :thumbsup

He's never gonna make it to Algeria. He will be killed by Italia traffic before he reaches Palermo.

LOL i think italy traffic can be considered very civilised and harmless compared to traffic in morocco or algeria.
and the trip will be done counterclockwise, so we will first reach algeria and then sicilia :thumbsup

Sounds like quite a trip!

Read "The Sheltering Sky" by Paul Bowles...it's set in North Africa.

An excerpt:

Quote:

Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. And yet it all seems limitless."
Have a great trip, take lots of pics, and post updates here of your adventures...

some things you only experience once in your lifetime and i have a strong feeling this is gonna be such an event.

spiro11 04-24-2007 01:46 PM

holy crap! is there a time frame that you have for that trip?

xato 04-24-2007 02:44 PM

Not really... but as said twice in the thread already we are thinking of about 14 days more or less ;)

Algeria is considered to be extremely dangerous. I remember Michael Palin went through on Pole to Pole I think it was. He had an armed escort.

Just checked it was on Sahara, not Pole to Pole.

You can always join the Légion étrangère (French Foreign Legion) if you run into trouble and get stranded... :winkwink:

BTW, Morrocan food is scrumptious.

Morocco is a great place, be careful going through the rif valley though, the government has destroyed all the dope, so people are really pissed and it's going to go off there soon. And try to avoid Algeria, there's alot of shit going on in that country, alot of extremist killings & bombings.

You're driving through my town, Alicante.

yeah, we are currently rethinking of how to get around Algeria as we would also need a visa and i am not sure if it is so easy to get one.

maybe we should meet for a beer in alicante :thumbsup

xato 06-23-2007 07:26 AM

For the following various reasons we have decided to change the route!

- Lots of paperwork to get a visa for Algeria
- Algeria and Tunisia dont really have much to offer
- Expensive ferry from Tunis to Sicilia
- We have already been to Italy many times

The new route can be found here:

We are going to start in about 5 Weeks :pimp
