EscortBiz 08-16-2002 07:43 PM

what is the speed like? also whats the cost tell me more

MagicksAntics 08-16-2002 07:46 PM

Cost was cheap...about $500 for the router and all the equipment needed to hook up three pc's and two laptops. I have a screaming cable connection that is new to the area so not many people are hooked up...the speed is insane. You should definately GET IT!!!

EscortBiz 08-16-2002 07:47 PM

so how far can you go with it?

I haven't tested the limits yet, but I've gone about 50 ft from my house and still had a 66% connection....and no noticable change in speed or quality.

Carlos 08-16-2002 07:50 PM

How fast is your wireless? I got 11mbits...

FiReC 08-16-2002 07:51 PM

Wireless is fucking great...I have 3 connections to pick from at my girlfriends apartment complex, and one of them is a 3mb line!! You would think that the people paying for that kind of line would know how to secure the wireless router.

So how do you find out who has what connection where u live and how do you access it?

MagicksAntics 08-16-2002 08:13 PM

Yup Carlos, 1.4...don't ask me, I'm just the happy receiver ;-)

ohgirl69...sometimes if you have a wireless lan card for you laptop you can drive into some downtown areas and access other people's wireless connections. Also there are some coffee shops, etc, that let you tap into their connections...

Carlos 08-16-2002 08:19 PM

Happy with 1.4? Thats soooo sloooooowwwww :1orglaugh

Get a good wireless card from cisco and you will have real speed and will be very happy :)
When i began to build my wireless network the cards did cost me $400. Now they are at $200....

MagicksAntics 08-16-2002 08:23 PM

Dude for my home connection....shit yeah I'm happy!!

Kimmykim 08-16-2002 08:31 PM

We've got it -- we run an SMS off our cable connection, and then have a linksys access point (of sorts, its rigged thanks to KC) so I can get almost the entire house, out to the pool, in the bed, all of the upstairs.

Doesn't work down toward my sons end of the house, but he's not allowed to have internet yet anyway.

Well worth it.

I've noticed in most major hotels where there are office buildings around like Vancouver, if you open the drapes you get the connection off the buildings.

And it was great in Miami, we did it in our booth, so I could sit and work without having to go to someone else's space to use wireless...

I have had wireless running in our house, to at least two (now four) computers, for the past two years. 11 Mbps, 150 foot range (or more), and all of our macs have antennae built into their cases for good reception. It is fast enough that I don't notice whether the girlfriend is using hers or not. Mmm... ADSL on wireless. Yummy.

I like the look on people's face when I am sitting on the couch, and I unplug my iBook, walk over to them, and load up a page or two on the web... Slowly, it dawns on them... "Wait. Where are the wires?"

I also like having an easy way to share our network connection through the whole house without running CAT-5. Occasionally, I even sit outside with my laptop. Not often, though. Not good to set a precident of going outside the house. Got a hermit thing going on. ;)

I've been wireless for a year. It's fucking great! I have a Netgear wireless router and access card for my laptop. With my cable modem attached to it I can get average speeds of 1.1mb on the second floor about 40 feet towards the back of my home through concrete walls!! I can get up to 1.5mb on my first floor when in the same room with the router which is just as fast as the wired connection. I can use it on the patio and at the coffee shop in the middle of the block! I love it!

I do have problems setting it back up after using it in hotels and other locations though. Some of the settings change when I do that. Then I have to call Netgear and spend time trying to break down what I am saying into easy to understand syllables for the overnight tech support based in India.
