I had gone to Australia when I was in high school. If my memory is correct, it is a paste that is made from the leftover yeast from the making of beer. Basically, it's the brown sludge at the bottom of the beer barrel, processed for you to slap on bread, crackers or whatnot. I also remember that it tastes like earwax.

Any of our Aussie webmasters wanna back me up on this?

I have a couple of Australian buddies. One tells me that it's some sort of black vegetable paste. I don't know about the leftover yeast thing, but either way it's pretty nasty.

Here's the funny thing: It's made by Kraft! At least Kraft is one of the bigger producers. My Autralian bussy sent me a link to the Kraft vegemite website. It had everything including a vegemite song (We love our veg-e-mite). Maybe the same as the link posted above, I didn't check.

Americans call budweiser a beer...... says a lot for their lack of taste. Our tapwater has more beer-like qualities than that shit.

But then again, most aussie kids grew up on the stuff, so the love for salty stuff that looks like shit and smells like beer dregs is something that we are conditioned to.
