Roller Derby? They Still Have Roller Derby?

I thought doctors banned women from doing this roller derby stuff?

Now it's all the rage again?

Anybody watch this stuff?

Sarah_Jayne 04-10-2007 05:05 AM

Every 10 years or so I see an article on how it is making a comeback.

Scott McD 04-10-2007 05:07 AM

I remember watching it when I was a kid but seeing women kick each other's teeth in wasn't a turn on.

Nowadays they're getting skimpier costume wise and it's sort of a 'Mommy's Pro Wrestling' thing.

it is becoming very popular in Toronto.

Actually....I play roller derby, have been for three years.

I first started (as a co-founder/event director) up in Seattle for the Rat City Rollergirls on the team, the Throttle Rockets. Right now, they are the #1 league (internationally) which includes over 100 flat track roller derby leagues in North America, Canada, the UK, and even Mexico. We have 2 national tournaments and several regional conferences and are governed by the Women's Flat Track League Association.

For the past two years we have had a roller derby convention in Vegas called "Rollercon". Rollercon is basically 3 days bouting and 3 nights of heavy drinking and all kinds of debauchery. There is nothing like a rollergirl party.

Since moving to LA, an old Seattle teammate and I started a Los Angeles flat track league called the Angel City Derby Girls. We play many Southern California Leagues as well as New Mexico and Las Vegas.

There is also a banked track league called the Derby Dolls.

Here are some sites if you want to check it out:

Cool! Some friends of mine are in that division. I did some toons for them ( doing toons for them ). They love my rollerderby toons cause I get the girls sexy and tough. So I'm of course going to do a comic book. It'll be fun.

I recently saw the Ratcity girls in Tucson Arizona for the Dust Devil tournament. You guys skated one hell of a bout. Nice to see you on the board. Rollerderby is a big thing here these days. Nothing like watching hot chicks in little skirts skate around pushing each other. WOOOHOOO So sexy.

Real popular in my hometown... At the local downtown event center.

AZSarah 04-10-2007 03:37 PM

I used to go to the rollerderby here in Phoenix last year... they had it at Castle Sports Club out here, not sure if they still do but it was damn fun.
They usually had a punk or rockabilly band playing & $2 keg beers! :thumbsup

Good times!

it is pretty huge here in Atlanta, and let me tell you, some of those matches are brutal, I wouldn't even get into the rink with those girls

Now THAT sounds like a great night out for the family! Getting drunk and watching women kick each other's asses while precariously perched on shoes with wheels on them.

If you could go back in time and tell George Washington that 231 years later it would come to this he would have spit out his lead teeth.

I'm always surprised at how many kids are at our bouts! The funniest thing is that up in Seattle, they started a junior league! There are a bunch of tween wanna-be rollergirls! And they even copy the way we dress! Which is kinda weird...considering.

We have a bout coming up on May 19th for those in the LA area. I will post details shortly.

ps: Doctor 30...who do you know up there?

Joetta, I did a few toons for some roller derby friends of mine. They LOVE em' and are doing t-shirts. Send me a pic of you in your team outfit and I'll whip up a toon for you to see what it is.

hollinator 04-19-2007 03:04 PM

Ha! I actually have a friend who plays here in LA. Never been to a bout though, so I'm not too sure just how popular it is here...
