I'm sure it pays to translate the site. Not everybody speaks english, and translating a single paysite is not that expensive.

However I wonder what it costs to run multilingual customer support!?

Isn't it a bit unethical to have a site in japanese and no way to understand emails from japanese members?

sextoyking 04-09-2007 01:17 PM

Todd,

We have done tons of paysites for customers in multiple lang's. Almost always the standard ones, Spanish, German, Japenese, etc.

I have never really asked the companies if it helps sales, etc but I gotta imagine it does..

Here's a few thoughts (without real numbers behind them)

Lots of folks are now using multi-lingual join pages, which is a great step in the right direction, but without multi-lingual tour pages, they're not really presenting a compelling or understandable reason to join and thus the non-English (or whatever language the site is primarily in) speaking prospect won't likely make it to the join page.

Tours and join pages aside, what happens once the surfer enters the member's area?

If he can't readily understand the navigational options, the user experience is diminished and retention suffers as a result, making multi-lingual an approach that must be executed site-wide to maximize effectiveness.

It's easy enough to use geo-IP and other technologies (or simply user selections on cute little flags) to then dynamically generate nav links, but I'm making things a bit easier by going cross-lingual, using English links but also having easily understandable iconic images (such as a still camera image for a link to the photo galleries and a video camera for the link to the videos, etc.) so that regardless of the user's language, he or she can still navigate and enjoy the site.

One other observation: a "Babel Fish" translation may or may not be better than nothing, but it does make a great base from which a professional translator can "clean up" ? something that might make your resulting text more along the lines you intended, while also saving you a few pesos.

:2 cents:

Hi Todd,

feel free to contact me via ICQ and I'll put you in touch with some of my clients.

I think the pure and simple translation won't do any good if you don't offer the right payment solution for that country,if you won't do a little SEO, if you translate only 50% of th site.

Regarding the support i think it would be a good idea to have representatives that speak a specific language, but i don't think it's necessary most of all for pay sites. i think a dating site or in general any website with a community feeling require more assistance.

I am sure it won't be a problem to find a webmaster who signed up for your affiliate program who is form another country.

We have a partnership with an outsourcing agency who can provide customer service in FR,ES,DE and other languages, plus we can help you to promote your affiliate program in other countries such as Italy,Germany, Spain and France thought Marketingxxx.net.

take care.

When I have my new paysitedesigns ready, I will translate them into German and spanish too!

This is why we recommend that clients fully exploit our geo-ip technology and direct difficult foreign traffic to an international version of their site eg http://www.webpinaccess.com/?layout=nightinvasion

This doubles up as both a tour and join page and it ideal for countries with neglible credit card penetration and is geo-ip in 37 languages:thumbsup

Busty 04-09-2007 03:00 PM

To do it right in the native tongue of the actual country is pretty expensive since you need a person that speaks the language fluently to do it for you and not use a translation program.

Depends how much foreign traffic you have too and from where.

russian and chinese translations are most important

BruceM 04-09-2007 03:52 PM

We very recently launched our first two of several translated versions of our VigRX Plus site in Leading Edge Cash:

http://es.vigrxplus.com
http://fr.vigrxplus.com

These are not adult membership sites, rather it is a tangible product. The tour and order pages are all translated - it just doesn't make sense to do one but not the other.

We're happy with the number of sales we've gotten so far. There hasn't been a ton of affiliate traffic to these sites yet as they are so new.

We'll be launching more translated versions of VigRX Plus in the near future, including German, Portuguese and others.

There is an increase in revenue through translating the sites, but it's pretty difficult to have an exact % as there are many variables involved. The correct localization of the translated page, the correct processors for international traffic, and which region. I can sit here, and list a million and 1 reasons that can determine your numbers, or lack there of.

Imagine all the sites on the net were in Chinese. We would either one try to learn Chinese, or two buy from sites that list there products in English, and that's just that. Together with my partner Matt Collins, and I we are launching what we consider a turn key solution to this problem www.GloballyTranslated.com The site is not fully complete, but you can feel free to take a look at some of what we have to offer. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
